The Most Depressing Ending Yet

How Bioware loves to rip my heart out and then laugh at me.

I am trying to get the achievements for this game, and in doing so, I needed to recruit Loghain into my party, which means Alistair leaves you forever. Anora wanted to kill him, and I stopped her from that, but he still is all angsty that you aren't going to kill Loghain. (Alternatively, you can let her execute him, but I didn't want to see that.) He leaves, and I think I choose the option that said "If you're going to go, then go." Ah, it was so cold! But that's not even the sad part yet.

In the epilogue text of the game, Alistiar left the Gray Wardens forever. There was an uprising in his name, but it was never tied to him. There were tales of an unkempt drunk who told tales of how he used to be a Gray Warden and a prince, but there "are many drunk men." So if you don't kill Loghain he throws a tantrum, leaves the Wardens forever, and becomes a drunk? That's so depressing! It seems to go against everything he stands for.

I hated that Alistair left. But Loghain was interesting to talk to. If you make Loghain do the ritual with Morrigan, he says something like "I'm going to close my eyes really hard and imagine my deceased wife." That had me laughing.
