I stayed up way too late last night even though I knew I needed to be up at 7 this morning, because I was working on a retelling of Sleeping Beauty and, for once, inspiration and actual words were flowing with incredible ease. I didn't want to give up such a wonderful opportunity until I had no choice, and ended up staying awake til about 2:30. However, I wrote, and edited so much previous writing, that now more than 50% of the story is new material in some way. It feels great.
I've been working on this story for maybe six months, bit by bit. It's not something that I've prioritized very highly, (lately I always rank the major stories I'm working on by importance. The story with Aubrey and Maxemilia is my #1 goal, with the second part of an original fairy tale-- called a Tale of Three Strands-- as #2, and either this Sleeping Beauty retelling or another original fairy tale called The Glass Island as #3.) or that I wanted to rush through, but I think I may be nearly done with it now. I plan to work on it a lot in the next couple days and would like to have it finished by Monday, but we'll see how that goes. I hope it will work out, it'd be great to finish another short story, and I'd love to have completed another fairy tale for my collection.
Unfortunately, even this late in the game I have no idea for a title. (This seems to happen a lot. It's annoying because I always find myself swamped with ideas for great titles, and no story to go with them, and when I'm actually writing a story, they generally have no real name other than some half-baked working title, usually based on their genre or the name of character in the story.) As for the mood of the story It's rather desolate, and a huge departure from my normal approach. It is told from first person and the narrator barely describes himself. No actual conversation goes on between the narrator and "Briar Rose" who is also never given a name. The story ends sadly for the both characters, or so it seems, as the princess's fate is never fully revealed.
Every title I think of sounds too cheerful or romantic for the mood of the story, or though it grasps some element of it, misses the central ideas. So if you have some wonderful idea for a title rattling around in your head, I would love it if you would share it with me.
