The day before yesterday we went up to Columbus, which we don't do nearly as often as we used to since gas has been getting more and more expensive lately. As a result, whenever we do go up, we like to try and make it like a day trip, and even if we have to do errands there, we try and throw a lot of fun stuff in, too. Well, this time we went just for fun.
Our first stop was Half-Price books; we spent several hours there looking around, perusing, buying. I lost myself in a large, lovely book full of paintings by the English painter George Romney (some of my favorites of his paintings are the many portraits of Emma Hamilton he did. They're just so gorgeous. There's this one of her in a dark blue coat that I adore.) My brothers bought a bunch of Star Wars books together and one of them also purchased a very nice book on Indian (as in the country) armour and weapons. I had my eye on a copy of Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, but decided to wait until I have more money to throw around.
For lunch we went to a Greek place we used to eat at all the time but hadn't been to in ages. They'd remodeled the inside and it looked so beautiful! It used to be just white stucco with blue trim, but they had painted the walls tan and painted ancient greek style murals in some places, restored the wooden ceiling beams to their natural look, put up pillars and painted the front desk to look like marble as well as tiling some of the counter area, replacing all the plastic furniture with dark wood chairs and tables and putting up some lovely prints of classical looking women. They were also playing Greek music instead of the local pop station, which was a nice touch. The food was, as always, absolutely gorgeous. It was such a treat to be back after so long.
Afterwards, we went to the library (where I used to work) and hung out for awhile. While we were there I managed to get a hold of a lovely book on Gainsborough that I'd been coveting for awhile but hadn't been able to get since the move. (I've had a good time flipping through that today...)
Then we drove back to our town, and went to the theater there. My brother bought us all tickets to see I am Legend. It was pretty entertaining, though kind of strange, and I think at the end we were all kind of thinking, "and what was the point of all this?" Still, it was nice to see something new for a change. Then we headed home, and all hung around the livingroom watching TV and eating popcorn before heading to bed, since it had been a rather late evening.
Yesterday was relatively grey and dull until I got home from work to find that my grandfather had sent the family a Christmas card. Along with his good wishes he sent along 50 dollars for every member of the family. So, this being my family, my father and brothers immediately began trying to convince the rest of us to put all our money together and buy a big screen TV. (Thankfully, that plan was abandoned rather quickly.) We ended up going to the store, and I bought some batteries for my walkman with a little extra money I got from tips at work. So far I haven't touched any of my 50 dollars, and I'm determined not to spend any of it without careful consideration first, since I'm dreadfully short on funds and a windfall of that magnitude is not going to rain on me again anytime in the near future. However, I'd happily spend a little to go out for dessert tonight. I think I'll go see if I can convince the others to accompany me... ^^
