Introducing Violet

Violet was born September 12th at 6:11 pm. She was 8 pounds, 8 ounces and 21 inches. She has a ton of hair on her head, and the color of it now and in the future is a good debate. I am in denial that it could ever be red, Kevin is convinced that it will be. Grandma Vrsek pointed out that if it came out of me, it could be red. Grandma Debbie continued to say, "I've seen that baby before." I showed her the newborn picture of Ev, and Violet and Ev look very much alike as newborns. We tracked down a picture of me as a newborn, and we look even more alike. My mom said, "I told you I've seen that baby before--it was you!" My hair does not look red in that newborn picture, a fact that makes me uneasy.

The original plan to was naturally induce Violet at the birthing Center on September 12th. I went into labor in the middle of night between the 11th and 12th. We had to wake up Ev and the Poopies so we could get to the hospital. On the way there, my contractions became 4 minutes apart. Once we got to the hospital, they lessened. After 5 attempts at an IV (super ouchy), Kevin and I went walking around the hospital to try and get labor started again. At the gift shop we bought an adorable shirt for Ev that said, "I'm a big sister!"

Birthing Violet was not easy, but labor is not an easy task. As the end neared, I begged Kevin to let me get the epidural, he ignored me, I begged Kevin to ask the staff to, "cut her out." He ignored me. I got pain medicine. It made me hallucinate and stopped me from breathing. I told Kevin I couldn't breathe. He ignored me.  Later,  I found out he told the nurses to ignore my pleas for the epidural too. When I'm writing it, it sounds really mean, but Kevin knew that it was just the perfect thing to do. We worked hard together, and when the time came to push, I got her out of there in 11 minutes. Violet was very red, and there was concern that she might be jaundiced. There was a test, but it didn't take, so we had to wait until nearly 10 pm to leave the hospital, while they retested her.

We stayed in contact with Ev throughout the process. The Poopies handed Ev off to Grandma Debbie who took care of her at home until we could get back there. We told Ev that we got a special big sister present. When we told her it was a t-shirt, she told us that we should have gotten her a toy. As it got later and later, Ev got more anxious to see us. She was having a hard time staying awake. We told her to sleep and that we would wake her up when we got home.

When we finally got home, Ev was just so excited to finally see her and we were so excited for them to finally meet.  We tried to prepare Ev as best we could by explaining that Violet won't be able to do anything at first, but that she learns by watching and listening.  The  next morning, Ev asked, "What can I teach Violet today?" Ev is still just in love with Violet. She is a warm and attentive big sister. She takes every opportunity to tell people that she's a big sister and to show off Violet. When Violet cries, Ev is quick to make up a song to sing or to try and find a toy that she thinks Violet will like. The other day she sang an adorable song about how cute Violet is and how she is growing and all kinds of cute stuff.
