Kindergarten

Ev had her first day of kindergarten last week. In the morning as I got her ready, she told me that I need to stop talking to her like she's a baby because she's in kindergarten now.  She was so excited to get on the bus. We got to the bus stop too early, and she was getting frustrated because the bus wasn't coming fast enough. When she finally saw the bus, she said, "This is going to be so great!"

When she got home, we asked her how she like it. She told us that she didn't want to come home. We asked her if she'd miss us. She told us there was a phone in the classroom and she would call if she missed us. I asked her, "What about Violet?" She told me that she would come home to see her.

About Friday, Ev started having a difficult time at home listening and she cried about every 10 minutes for every little thing. I was going crazy. Finally, on Sunday I had a talk with her, after another melt down where she cried and said she was a bad kid. She told me that twice she had not listened to the teacher. The teacher asked the class to sit down, and both times, Ev did not follow directions. On redirect, she told me that did listen. Basically, she was feeling troubled because she didn't make good decisions. She's a little perfectionist and in her mind, she ruined everything. Fortunately, she didn't think that her teacher didn't like her. She gets very worried when people who care for her become disappointed in her behavior. Her dad and I explained that she can't hold these things in, she has to talk to us. We also explained that kindergarten is new and scary for everyone and that all of the kids are learning new things and sometimes kids learning make mistakes. It's okay, because the teacher is helping them to learn how to make good decisions.

I have a feeling that the baby is going to add a dimension to this transition that we aren't quite prepared to handle. Until Violet comes, I am home and Ev and are going to spend some special afternoons together, doing things she likes to do. Today, we are making cookies as a surprise for Daddy.
