Urgent Kitten/cat advice needed! Please advise me if you can!

For people out there who may be in-the-know (boglin, scarybex, wicked_sky?) - I could do with some advice on finding a satisfactory resolution for some cute but stray cats.

There are some beautiful wee cats that turned up as very young strays at an associate's house. Assume they are siblings, and when they came they could only have been a few weeks old - tiny kittens.

The associate eventually started feeding them, put collars on them, found that one was a boy and one a girl. They've opened an outside cupboard in their back yard that the cats can sleep in, and for a while they provided a cat bed there, and regular food & clean water. I'm not at this house very often as it's in a different city, so I couldn't tell what was happening there all the time.

It was pointed out to them that boy and girl cats eventually breed, but they didn't seem to take this seriously, even though I'd thought that by about 6 months it's definitely possible for them to do so. It seemed like they were kinda 'claiming' these cats as no longer strays, but didn't want to put the money or responsibility into having them vaccinated and neutered. Apart from those things, they seemed to be getting food, care & attention.

Then the female cat started to get large & lumpy around the middle, she was like that for a couple of months, now she's skinny again, so I presume she did get pregnant and has now had kittens somewhere.

I was at the house the other day and had a look in the outside cupboard - the cat bed is missing, it was pretty filthy (old bits of food lying around on the floor) and there was no fresh water. I don't think the associate is really taking looking after them very seriously, and I don't think they'll ever wish to pay for the vets bills, either proactive or should something happen.

It's such a shame as they are beautiful cats, very very good natured, curious and gentle, affectionate and up for play, and definitely in need of cuddles & attention as well as food & medical seeing-to.

I absolutely love cats and I would hate to call an outside agency only for them to be put down when they would definitely make someone lovely pets. I can't home them myself as my lifestyle is peripatetic, I'm only based at my house for around 2 weekends out of every month, so there's just no way I could manage to be there properly to look after a pet.

** update, just found out that 5 kittens have turned up, they must have been hidden away by the mother cat **

So, I'm appealing to anyone out there who has a clue in these matters - who should I call that will do something about these cats, make sure they're not in pain (one of the kittens might be injured), and will look after them, hopefully rehome them? It's not their fault they've ended up having more kittens .... I'd be very upset if they ended up being put down but clearly they need to be got out of this situation PDQ!
