A couple of WIP drawings I've yesterday and today that I could really use some critique on.
First a preliminary sketch for a larger fanart project. I was drawing a pose from a reference picture and it got really messy, so I'm going to use tracing paper to clean it up for the final artwork. The reference pose is
this.
Here's the sketch:
I just had to take a picture with my camera, since I haven't installed the driver for the scanner on my new laptop yet.
I'm mostly happy with it. Fashion proportions invading, or course, but I think it's alright. ...and then sometimes I look at it and all I can see is problems. I'm concerned about the overall proportions, especially the arms. It's weird because the original picture has the slightest bit of foreshortening which makes things sticky.
I did a bit of shading in some places, mostly just as a guide to finding were body parts went, but for the most part I didn't worry about shading or anything. This is just a sketch to get the pose down, after all.
(Oh, and on the side you can see where I scribbled down a fanfic drabble that popped into my head. We were about to leave for the chiropractor--back feels so much better now--so I just had to write it down quickly on whatever was handy.)
Next picture is a little illustration type thing of the main characters from the novel I'm writing when I force myself to sit down and work on it. I'm satisfied with it overall, I guess.
James and Alice. Their relationship is....complicated, to say the least.
Profile has never been my forte, but I'm trying to work on that. I'm pretty happy with how Alice looks. I feel like I got her to look like she looks in my head. Still not completely happy with James, though. Something about the nose and placement of the eye isn't quite like I want it to look.
Questions:
1. Do they look massively out of proportion to each other? I feel like James is too big. And I don't mean heightwise, I just mean does James look like he's standing next to a slightly-less-than-life-size doll?
2. I hate drawing people in profile. I redrew James's neck, shoulders, and body more times than I care to count, and I'm still not sure it looks right. Does his neck and shoulders just look completely wonky?
Expressions need work. Or at least James's does. I wanted him to look kind of angry/upset--in my head this takes place during a crucial scene. I think Alice looks appropriately subtly hopeless. Meh. It's improvement.
Probably not going to put these on devART until they're fininshed; or I may dig out some other older unpublished sketches and just post a sketchdump.
