The catch-word(s) phrase at work is ".. is what you're doing .. VALUE ADDED to the business .. " At first I thought it was some hokey biz talk, but the more I think about it, I see that it's actually a concept that I should be applying to my life outside of work. Everything I do should have value and not be a waste of my time

remember our conversation about most managers not really internalizing and understanding what business concepts they're being asked to implement? the concept of "value-add" really relates to the examination of all processes (ie, costs) in the value chain and ensuring everything adds value to the product/output. anything else is eliminated as they are unnecessary costs.

in your personal life, these could be eating lunch at an expensive restaurant when the corner deli would suffice. myself, i spend far too much money eating out but consider it a necessary cost (for the most part) because it enables me to spend some time with people i wish to strengthen ties with.
