The catch-word(s) phrase at work is ".. is what you're doing .. VALUE ADDED to the business .. " At first I thought it was some hokey biz talk, but the more I think about it, I see that it's actually a concept that I should be applying to my life outside of work. remember our conversation about most managers not really internalizing and understanding what business concepts they're being asked to implement? the concept of "value-add" really relates to the examination of all processes (ie, costs) in the value chain and ensuring everything adds value to the product/output. anything else is eliminated as they are unnecessary costs.

in your personal life, these could be eating lunch at an expensive restaurant when the corner deli would suffice. myself, i spend far too much money eating out but consider it a necessary cost (for the most part) because it enables me to spend some time with people i wish to strengthen ties with.
