If it weren't for Olette, Roxas wasn't sure how he would be dealing with the constant scrambled eggs feeling. Roxas, Hayner, Pence and Olette sat beneath a small cluster of trees. It was too warm to sit in their classroom during lunch hour and since the absence of crutches in Roxas' life, it was easier to make the trek to the courtyards in between classes.
“Told you,” Hayner said almost smugly after Roxas had retold his encounter with Riku that morning.
Roxas and Olette collectively frowned at him.
“You didn't tell me that Riku was secretly a jerk,” Roxas retorted.
“No,” Hayner sighed, scratching the back of his head. “I just said it was crazy to try for the team. You'll end up hurt some how,”
Pence nodded sympathetically, patting Roxas' shoulder. “We did warn you, though,”
“You guys aren't helpful at all,” Olette said. She sat next to Roxas, offering him a cake from her lunch. “Don't mind Riku,”
“He was just so . . .” Roxas was picking at his own lunch. He felt too discourage to eat but made the effort regardless. “ . . . mean. He didn't need to, you know?”
He glanced at Olette and was met by her mother-hen-concerned- look.
“Maybe he had a bad day?” she offered. Roxas wished he were able to rationalize Riku's behaviour. He had been through it a million times- had he been in a bad mood? Had he decided to go without coffee or breakfast? Or was this how he really felt? Part of him wished it was just an awful dream.
“Speaking of the devil . . .” Pence said.
Roxas glanced up from his lunch, feeling the scrambled eggs sensation and saw what Pence had meant. Leaving the gym's entrance was the track team, led by Sora and Riku. He froze, unsure if he dared to confront Riku again or if he wanted to hide and save himself the embarrassment.
“Of course, they're always holding practice,” Hayner sneered.
“It is Monday . . .” Roxas muttered.
Olette gasped, nearly dropping her lunch that she left on her lap. “Oh! Why did we choose to sit so close to the track?”
Turning around, Roxas noticed Olette's sudden realization and groaned. Why hadn't he thought of it? The team passed; Sora waved enthusiastically. Roxas returned the wave halfheartedly. However, when Riku passed by, he gave him a quick glance then turned his head towards Sora. Roxas frowned, watching him only for a second.
“How rude,” Hayner said, a bit louder than necessary. If Hayner's intent was to catch Riku's attention, then mission accomplished. Riku stopped, motioned to Sora to wait and headed towards Roxas.
“You said something?” Riku asked.
“Why do you think I have anything to say to you?” Roxas asked, almost surprised by the cruelty in his words.
Riku raised an eyebrow, almost amused. “I was hoping for some sort of confession,”
There was a pause- their eyes met and Roxas felt his face flood with warmth. There was no way he was going to confess anything to Riku, not in these circumstances. “The only thing I have to say to you is that . . .” he paused again. “ . . . that, that I'm trying out again on Friday!”
Sora bounced towards them. “Again? Awesome!”
“Well, maybe you'll actually have improved,” Riku replied.
“Trust me,” Roxas grinned. “I'll do the hundred metres in ten minutes, just watch,”
Riku smirked. “I look forward to it,”
With that said, Riku and Sora joined the rest of the team on the track. Roxas, had to admit, felt confident. Not only had he trained with Riku, but his foot had been healed and his usual routine had resumed without much difficulty. Roxas glanced over at Olette, who smiled.
“Has it even been a month?” Olette asked quietly.
“No, but that doesn't matter,” Roxas replied, clenching his fist. “I can't bail out now, I gotta do this,”
Hayner sighed. “Can't say he isn't determined,” he muttered to Pence.
