Questions from Only☆Star's readers to Yamashita Tomohisa!
Q1. Yamashita-kun, do you think that the "destined meeting" exists? (Saitama Prefecture, 20, female)

I believe so. I'm the kind that would think something is coincidence or inevitable. So, in human relationships as well, I end up wondering if it wasn't fate. For example, seeing a friend by chance while walking down the road, and just like that, without having made previous arrangements, you go have a meal together. Such coincidences occur often.

Q2. When composing a song, what sort of appearance do you put on? (Nagano Prefecture, 26, female)

It depends on the moment. If I'm at home, it's mostly in the most comfortable and rough appearance. But there are times when it would come to me while waiting at work, when I'm on the train, or under the shower. In the end, clothes are just different each time.

Q3. What sort of things do you think of when writing lyrics? (Aichi Prefecture, 17, female)

Lyrics aren't like writing a letter or chatting, they're words inside the music. There are things one has to think of, like the number of syllables and the sound. It's hard, but it's fun. [I wonder if this is what that girl meant. Yamapi smart!]

Q4. What artists influence you? (Osaka, 27, female)

There are many but... that's a professional secret (laugh). I'm more influenced by western artists, but if we were to talk about the artists I like, then it's Southern All Stars. I really think Sazan are amazing.

Q5. I heard you wanted to challenge writing lyrics in Korean. Are you studying Korean as well? (Saitama Prefecture, 26, female)

I haven't gone as far as studying it, but I'd like to try and sing in Korean.

Q6. You seem to compose melodies and write lyrics quite often. Do you have a stock cherished somewhere? (Yamaguchi Prefecture, 26, female)

I have a lot! Oh, maybe not that many... I have a few. But if I don't bring them out at the time, they change inside of me. A piece written one year ago can only have the me of one year ago. I want to treasure the feelings and tension of those moments, so it's best to compose at the last minute and release.

Q7. Among your songs some are pieces with western music taste and others are melodic pop songs. Are there any differences emotionally when you sing them? (Shizuoka Prefecture, 27, female)

They're totally different. Ballads aside, western taste gives more imoprtance to rhythm and sound rather than to lyrics. Like the way words sound. But, in the case of pop songs, I want to convey easy-to-understand words in Japanese.

Q8. Are there any songs you like from your senpais (seniors) or kohais (juniors) at Johnny's? (Tokyo, 28, female)

Matsumoto Jun-kun and I went to the same high school. If I remember correctly, when I was in first year and Jun-kun in 3rd, Arashi's ♪~"Ganbaru sa, makenai no sa~" song... 『Kimi no tameni boku ga iru』 was the craze at school. It remained stuck in my mind and I like it. As for juniors, let's see... In Hey! Say! JUMP's case, it would be their debut song, 『Ultra Music Power』.

Q9. When you decide the title of a song, is there anything you're particular about? (Saitama Prefecture, 20, female)

To make it catchy. Same goes for 『One in a million』; it makes up a single phrase, doesn't it? Though I guess there are many people who don't know what it means. That and its sound. An attractive title is better.

Q10. Among NEWS' songs, which one do you think you absolutely want to listen to in summer? (Aichi Prefecture, 16, female)

『SUMMER TIME』. Both title and song are definitely summery. [Duh!]

Q11. I think you'll have many opportunities from now on to go on music shows on your own. Compared to when you go with NEWS members, are there any differences, like being nervous or such? (Kanagawa Prefecture, 20, female)

Feelings are different. As expected, when I'm alone it's just me so I give 150%. But with NEWS there's a balance. There are precious moments when we all come together.

Q12. Your skin and hair are so lovely I'm jealous. What things do you usually watch out for? (Kanagawa Prefecture, 15, female)

Hair is hereditary, so I have the same hair type as my parents. That said, I don't do anything in particular. A person I know with frizzy hair kept going for treatment at a beauty salon for 3 years till it became silky.
As for the skin, I don't do anything in particular, though I do apply face lotion. That and, if I get pimples, I put medicine on it (laugh).

Q13. Sometimes you write in your nikki that you make your own meal. What sort of things do you make, I want to know! (Osaka, 19, female)

Ramen. Not cup ramen, the one in bags. I don't consider cup ramen to be cooking (laugh). It begins with putting water into the pot and heating it up. Then I put the noodles, and add things like an egg.

COVER ARTIST STORY MY ENTAME LIFE #28
What's an ENTAME [ 1] you've been into lately?

Yamashita I guess it's Ne-Yo. I went to the live the other day, too. He was really cool. He does it simple, but the way he shows things is really great. I received great stimulus from that.

Do you often go to lives?

Yamashita I go as much as I can to the ones of artists I like. When Lady Gaga, who has gained my interest rather than my liking, came to Japan, I went to the club event. But the start was delayed by 2.5 hours! She made us wait too long, I ended up listening to one song and then I left (laugh).

So you do mostly listen to wetsern music?

Yamsahita Right now I listen a lot to western music. But speaking of Japanese music, it's Southern All Stars. I've always liked even their songs from 20 years ago. I think it's amazing. Specially during summer, songs like 『Taiyou wa tsumina yatsu』 are just perfect. They really raise one's excitement.

[1] ENTAME: entertainment

This week's faceYamashita Tomohisa

Yamashita Tomohisa who, right after the shooting for the film 『Ashita no Joe』 ended, rushed into the production of his 3rd single 『One in a million』. While still in production, in the midst of his super busy schedule, the cover shooting and interview for Only☆Star are held. Yet he showed no signs of fatigue, rather faced the camera with a colorful expression. The camerman who had the first meeting with Yamashita praised him, while looking into the finder, "You're quite manly!" At that, the expression on an always cool Yamashita loosened for a moment and he quietly said, "Thank you." When at the time of the interview he was told, "That look was impressive," he replied with an embarrassed grin, "'Cause, it made me happy, but there was nothing I could say but thank you." He was concerned about the room temperature so he opened the window, and then put on some music to eliven the shoot... He seemed cool and mysterious, but actually his straightforward and pleasantly warm personality was once again present at the interview location.

T/N:
That's pretty much it for the Yamapi parts in this issue of Only☆Star. There was a bit that was explaining his new Toshiba CM, and the usual blah blah about his new single, but nothing interesting (^_^)

Thanks again to kyara and watchful21 for the scans.
And thank you for reading. Over and out ☆彡
