Paper Planes and Puppies

“Sit. Roll over. Paw. Sit up. Stand.”

Junsu sighed at the sight of his dog lazily lying on the ground, ignoring Junsu’s every order. “You listen to Yoochun, so why won’t you listen to me?” he muttered, ruffling up the dog’s white fur.

“Xiahki, sit.”

At the sound of Yoochun’s voice Junsu immediately sat up. Yoochun laughed. “I was talking to your dog.”

“I know that,” Junsu hissed and glared at Xiahki who was starring up at Yoochun, sitting. “It’s impolite to peek into other people’s backyard, in case you didn’t know.”

Yoochun smiled, folding his arms over the tall fence separating them. The fence must be over two meters high, so he must have been standing on something and Junsu wanted to push him over.

“I thought I heard my name.”

“Well, you thought wrong,” Junsu said and got up from the grass, patting his butt from any dirt left.

“You missed a spot,” Yoochun smirked and Junsu threw him a glare.

“I’ll send my dog after you if you don’t stop being such a perv.”

“I was just trying to help,” he shrugged. “Besides, Xiahki loves me more than you. Right, Xiahki?”

Xiahki barked and Junsu looked at his dog. Stunned.

“How did you do that?” he asked, but when he turned around Yoochun was gone.

They had only moved into their new house two months ago, but his parents and even his dog were already infatuated with this Park Yoochun from next door. He’d make his mother blush and his father thunder in laughter. He had even offered to walk Xiahki together with his own dogs after he had heard Junsu complain about doing it. Junsu immediately refused, because he knew nothing good could come from Park Yoochun doing you a favour. The boy was insane. He told Junsu he loved him three days after meeting him. He told him he had a great ass a week later, and pretty much every day after that. It didn’t help that the window in Junsu’s room looked straight into Yoochun’s and the other way around. Their houses stood so close together that they could actually talk to each other without raising their voices, not that Junsu wanted to talk to the creep or anything.

Some days when he’d leave his window open he’d find paper planes with: ‘I really want to touch myself’ or ‘My window is always open~ And so is my fly~’ or the even weirder ones: ‘I love you, more than the air I breath’ and ‘I thought of you all day today’. Junsu decided that Park Yoochun had a very strange sense of humour.

He left Xiahki in the yard and went back into the house to start on the pile of homework waiting for him in his room. When he reached his room he was happy to see that Yoochun wasn’t in his.

He was just about to start when he heard Xiahki’s barks and Yoochun’s laughter coming from the backyard. He cursed them both and looked for his headphones. He managed to get some things done that way but it didn’t take long for Yoochun to somehow disturb his peace again. A paper plane flew through his window and landed next to his desk. He sighed before picking it up, not looking up to see Yoochun standing there with that stupid smile of his.

‘It’s not very polite to have headphones on when people want to talk to you’.

Junsu read it, crumpled it up and threw it in the bin on the other side of his desk. He had learned that ignoring Yoochun usually made him go away faster. But soon another paper plane followed.

‘That was rude. Make it up to me. Take off your shirt.’

Junsu stood up and saw Yoochun’s eyes widen, and a huge grin spread over hi face. Idiot.

Junsu slammed his window shut and closed the blinds before going back to his homework.

The worst thing was that they went to the same school too. Junsu didn’t get why everyone seemed to love Yoochun so much. He fit in with every single group, had every girl wrapped around his finger and could even make the teachers laugh. Junsu had to admit that he was indebted to him. If Yoochun hadn’t followed him around the school so much and hadn’t introduced him to all his friends, he would never have been able to make friends as fast as he did. Other than that, Yoochun was a complete weirdo. He told every one he knew that he had a crush on Junsu and there were even some idiots who believed it and who wouldn’t stop bothering Junsu with questions and comments like: “Have you kissed?” “I heard you guys live next door to each other. You must sleep over a lot.” “I would die if Park Yoochun liked me.” Well, Junsu would die too if it was true, but he knew for a fact that it was just one of Yoochun’s stupid little jokes that had to make his life hell.

His mother had made him take Xiahki for a walk after diner and of course the second Yoochun saw Junsu leave his house he followed him, own dogs in tow.

“You should tell me when you walk Xiahki, so I can come with you more often,” Yoochun panted when he had finally caught up to him.

“And why would I want that?”

“So you can feel my rays of love, of course.”

Junsu rolled his eyes and got dragged by Xiahki who was starting to fight his leash to catch up with Yoochun’s Lala and Harang who were running around them on the sidewalk freely.

“You should let him go. He could get hurt this way,” Yoochun commented.

Junsu chose to ignore him and started jogging after Xiahki so he wouldn’t be pulling the leash anymore. Yoochun strolled after them until they reached the park and Junsu finally let Xiahki off his leash. Junsu watched the dogs play from a bench and Yoochun soon joined him.

“Hey.”

Junsu looked at him weirdly before looking away again.

“Don’t you think this playing hard to get thing is going a bit too far?”

Junsu looked at him again and frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“I know you don’t want to give in immediately but would it kill you to be less harsh sometimes?”

“Would it kill you to stop making crude jokes and embarrassing me in front of the whole school?” Junsu shot back.

“I didn’t know the sex jokes bothered you so much,” Yoochun said. “I’m sorry, okay? I won’t make them anymore.”

“The sex jokes aren’t even the worst. It’s the ‘I’m in love with you’ thing that’s getting on my nerve. More and more people are starting to think you’re serious.”

Yoochun didn’t say anything for a while and stared at their dogs playing with each other in the distance.

Junsu was listening to their barks when Yoochun finally said: “Here I thought I was wooing you, and instead you thought it was a very bad joke.”

But it wasn’t what he said that made Junsu realize he had missed something important for the last two months, but the way he said it. His voice was shaky, his eyes darting from one place to another and he had pushed his hands deep into the pockets of his jeans. “I’ll see you later,” he said, before getting up. With a sharp whistle, he called all three dogs towards him. Xiahki tried to follow them when they headed towards the entrance of the park, but Junsu was fast enough with putting on his leash. They left and Junsu and Xiahki stayed behind.

Junsu stayed there, on that bench with Xiahki restlessly pulling on his leash for over an hour, thinking about what he had just heard. Yoochun really liked him, Junsu had lead him on without knowing it and broken his heart without knowing it and been an over all asshole without knowing it. Guilt washed over him when he thought about how straightforward Yoochun had been with his feelings this whole time and how much courage that must have taken, just to have all his efforts waved off as bad jokes and plain annoying.

After he got home that night he went to open the blinds, just to find Yoochun’s window closed and his curtains shut, for the very first time since Junsu came to live there.

It had almost been more than two weeks and Junsu was surprised to see how easy it was to avoid Yoochun and any of his close friends. Then again, they were probably trying to avoid him too, so things worked both ways. The thing that bothered Junsu though, was that Yoochun’s window stayed closed and so did his curtains. The only times they were open was when Junsu just came back from school, probably because Misses Park opened them. But then ten minutes later they were closed again and Junsu’s guilt came rushing through him. Not only had he taken a serious confession as a joke, but he had taken away his sunshine too.

It was a Friday night and Junsu had rejected his friend’s invitations to a party to stare out of his window. Yoochun’s curtains were open for a change and Junsu guessed that was because he hadn’t come home yet. The room was dark and Junsu decided to wait until Yoochun came home and then he was going to do something. Tell him he was sorry, ask if they could at least be friends…anything to get rid of the guilt.

He had almost dozed off when Yoochun’s light finally went on. He looked at the clock on his nightstand and saw that it was 3:30.

He turned back to his window and noticed something weird. Yoochun wasn’t alone. There was another guy with him and before he could get a better look at him, Yoochun walked over to his window and pulled the curtains together.

All of a sudden Junsu was wide awake. That dick. Two weeks and the asshole is over him? What if Junsu actually liked him back and just needed a little time to get over the initial shock of it all? Not that that was the situation or anything, but what if?

The lights stayed on for over an hour and Junsu patiently waited in the darkness of his own room for them to finally go out. When they did he went to his light switch and turned his on lights on. And off. And on. And off again. He kept doing it until he heard Yoochun’s window slide open.

Junsu left the lights out and went to his window.

“What?” Yoochun hissed.

“Who’s your friend?” Junsu hissed back.

“Why do you care?”

“Is this what you call being in love with me?”

“What’s wrong with you? Why are you sending me light signals in the middle of the night?”

“Why do you keep asking me so many questions?”

“Why do you keep asking me so many questions?”

They stared at each other, the only light shining on them being streetlights, and they realized this conversation wasn’t going anywhere.

“You said you liked me,” Junsu finally whispered.

“And you said I was annoying.”

“But I didn’t think you were serious.”

“That’s even worse.”

“But…I didn’t think you were serious.”

“I get it. It’s been a long night, so if you don’t mind-“

“Come over,” Junsu blurted out. It was already to lat when he thought about his words, but he didn’t regret.

“Now?”

“…If you want.”

“Three weeks ago I would have jumped through this window and into yours.”

“And now?”

“And now, I’m going to calmly used the stairs and doors.” The window closed and so did the curtains. Junsu quietly went downstairs and waited for Yoochun at the front door. He arrived a few seconds later and Junsu held up a finger against his own lips a sign for him not to talk. If his parents found them sneaking around like that he’d probably be dead.

They went upstairs and Junsu closed the door behind them before turning on the lights. “What am I doing here?” Yoochun whispered. Finally getting to see him under a normal light Junsu noticed how tired he looked.

“Why do you look so worn out?”

“Because it’s almost 5 in the morning and I haven’t slept all night. You don’t look like a rose either.”

“That can’t be the only reason. You look like you’ve been run over by a truck.”

“Aren’t you flirtatious,” Yoochun rolled his eyes and made himself comfortable on Junsu’s bed. “Lala was giving birth and I was with her all night.”

“Lala had puppies? I didn’t even know she was pregnant!”

“That because you never listen to me. I told you this before. She had little white huskies.”

“Who’s the father?”

“You really don’t listen. Little white huskies.”

“Wait, Xiahki is the dad? I didn’t even know they were…in that kind of relationship.”

“They were and when you crushed my heart and didn’t let me take Xiahki out we separated them. It’s all your fault really.”

Junsu sat down next to him and sighed. “Our dogs have a better relationship then us.”

“Again, your fault.”

“Yoochun…who was that guy you were with?”

“Why do you care?”

“Because…if you say you like and two weeks later you’re coming home with a guy at 4 in the morning, I start doubting you were serious again.”

“Just a friend. He stayed with me while Lala gave birth and I convinced him to stay over because it was too late.”

“Aha.”

“Were you jealous?”

“I think…I was.”

“Well, now that’s interesting.” He turned around to look Junsu straight in the eye. “Not so funny any more, is it?”

“I never said it was funny. I said it was a bad joke. Bad.”

“What exactly are you saying now?”

Junsu didn’t know and there was really time to think so he said the first thing that came to mind. “I want us to be better than our dogs.”

Yoochun laughed. “If you’re prepared to crap out 6 babies at the same time, I’m all for it.”

“That’s not what I mean. I just want to make it up to you.”

“With a kiss?”

“What? No! Yoochun, no.”

“But maybe you’ll like it. Aren’t you curious?”

Junsu stared at those big eyes for a second, before they wandered down to those full…lips…

“You’re hesitating,” Yoochun smirked. “I’m going to do it.” He leaned in and Junsu started to panic.

“No, Yoochun! I’m not ready! Get off!”

“You’ll enjoy it, I’m sure. Just pucker up-“

“What’s going on here?”

Mrs Kim’s thundering voice made them both freeze in their awkward positions. Junsu was half sitting, half lying and Yoochun was hovering over him.

Junsu’s parents both stood in the entrance of Junsu’s room, looking at them as if they had gone mad.

Yoochun sat up straight and looked at them with a huge grin on his face.

“I just…came to share the good news! Xiahki is a dad!”

“They actually fit in the palm of my hand! Look, Yoochun! He fits in the palm of my hand!”

“If you keep balancing them like that, they’re going to fall,” Yoochun warned, petting the little white puppies in the large basket lying in his backyard.

“I’m being careful,” Junsu assured him, grabbing the one balancing on his palm with both hands and putting him on his lap. “Are you keeping all of them?”

“Six more dogs? I don’t think so. Our new house is only big enough for one more.”

“New house? You’re moving?” Junsu put the puppy back into the basket before turning all his attention on Yoochun.

“You really haven’t listened to a word I’ve said these past months, have you?”

Junsu looked down. It was true. He had zoned out as much of Yoochun’s talking as possible because in his mind there was nothing this guy could say that made sense.

“I’m moving in two weeks.”

“But you can’t just leave! What about Xiahki? You can’t just take Lala with you and go. We can’t break them up. You have to stay.”

“Xiahki will find another girlfriend. I don’t think him and Lala were that serious anyway.”

“You don’t think they were that serious? They have six children together!” Junsu said and stood up angrily.

Yoochun stood up too and squinted his eyes. “Is this really about Lala and Xiahki or is this about Yoochun and Junsu? Are you saying you’re going to miss me when I’m gone?”

“What? No. I’m just saying that out dogs-“

Junsu was silenced when Yoochun came unexpectedly close and pressed their lips together in a soft kiss, before moving back slightly. “I got you,” he smiled playfully. “I’m not moving.”

“But-“

“Just wanted to see your adorable reaction,” he smirked. “And since you haven’t punched me in the face yet…”

He leaned in again and this time Junsu’s eyes fluttered shut and he met him halfway.
