Object of my affection: Steven Wilson
This is a fangirling entry. Of course :D And of my friends list, I think only solarfallsrealm who’s aware of Steven Wilson. ^_^
Who is Steven Wilson? Let Wikipedia answers that. Or better, the www.swhq.co.uk does. Steven Wilson is the busiest musician whom I’ve ever fangirling with. Let’s count the projects he works: Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No Man, Bass Communion, I.E.M, and collaboration with Mikael Akerfeldt, producing and mixing stuffs with Robert Fripp, Anathema, Pendulum, Orphaned Land, etc, etc, and the list will go on forever. If you think the names are too many for a musician to work with, I don’t think Steven Wilson agrees with you.
Anyway, it’s not that important cause I’d like to share the story of me being in love with Steven Wilson.
I’ve known Porcupine Tree (PT) since the Deadwing year, I think. But the first song I heard (and fell in love with) was Nil Recurring. I found it in someone’s multiply account. He posted 2 other songs, Open Car and Blackest Eyes. I didn’t know much about their songs then (only Normal and Lazarus), but I knew that Porcupine Tree is a good band. And everytime I met someone who said he/she liked Porcupine Tree, I was like “hey, hey, invite me to the club.” Although later, I kept quiet when he/she asked me about PT albums XDD.
One of them let me copied her Porcupine Tree collections. I copied 7 albums. Years later, I only listened to a quarter of those songs. Not until 3 months ago that I started to listen all of them in heavy rotation. The last sentence is of course, exaggerated :p But the important thing is the reason.
I texted my PT source that I’m terribly bored with Matthew Bellamy’s voice (I used to be a big fan of Muse) and that I’m no longer Mrs. Matthew Bellamy (hahaha). She was kinda surprised and asked me, “So, what do you wanna be called? Mrs. Steven Wilson?” and I replied, “Ok. Mrs. Steven Wilson sounds fine.”
And that’s how I fell madly deeply in love with Steven Wilson =)) If she didn’t ask me if it’s okay to dub me Mrs. Steven Wilson, I wouldn’t find an idea that falling in love with SW is super cool. It’s a stupid story, I know. XDD
I already searched (and tried to listen to) other Steven Wilson’s projects years ago. So it has nothing to do with her dubbing me Mrs. SW :p. Not all of them are ear friendly. Blackfield is the most ear friendly than the other three. No Man is too sad. I.E.M is incomprehensible. Bass Communion is even worse than I.E.M. I’ll tell a bit about them in another entry. Maybe :p So if you expect me to be a devoted fan who spends hours everyday to explore Steven Wilson’s musicality, well… isn’t it too exhausting? Lol.
I mean, I’m just a silly fangirl. I’m a fanshitter. I’m merely a consumer of music and not persistent enough to learn to be music reviewer. To be honest, I suspect my ears are actually glass arms (lol)… means I can’t identify musical notes. :p And I don’t even try to change that :DD and it applies to anything. When I idolize an actor, for instance, I don’t learn more about…say, acting. Most of the time I just try everything to find his… GOSSIPS.
Yes. The amounts of gossips you have on certain artists indicate your level of love for them. This is Sujeneng Law I. Hahaha… For example, when I joined Indonesian Dream Theater Fans Club, I didn’t think I loved Dream Theater then. I woke up with some guitar riffs playing in my head and one minute later I recognized it as a Dream Theater’s song, though. But when I read that John Petrucci (the guitarist) is called The Bear, or that John Myung (bassist) is suspiciously a hair shampoo model (lol), or that Mike Portnoy (drummer) is control freak, I began to dig more gossips about them. I shared jokes with other DT fans. I’m not interested in their love life, though. :p
But I am interested in Steven Wilson’s love life (and eager to enter it :D). I am interested in knowing the reason of why he often performs barefeet, why he wears earring in his right ear, how many times he does creambath in a week, or the age when he lost his virginity (and with whom) :DD This kind of information avoids me from being involved in serious type of discussion on Steven Wilson. Even my male friend is (voluntarily? Lol) dragged into this kind of conversation:
Him: Only Steven Wilson? You don’t want Mikael Akerfeldt as well? ;)
Me: No. His growl vocal terrifies me.
Him: Well, answer him with Angela Gossow-like voice. He’ll be amazed. Maybe Steven did that too. And look, now they’re holding hands and singing Lazarus in rose garden.
OMG. I led him to Wilson/Akerfeldt shipper club. Hahaha.
I’m a fujoshi. But as much as I love male slash, I hate Steven/Aviv pairing. I rambled about it in my previous entry. You know, the one with ‘hate Aviv Geffen’ tag. :P I think Aviv looks too passionate towards Steven. See that damn picture. It seems he says, “Steven is mine.” No. You’re wrong, Aviv. Steven is MINE.
Now we’re talking about Sujeneng Law II: You are positively a fan of certain artist when you want to marry him/her; and if you’re of same sex with that certain artist, you’d go gay/lesbian for him/her. Or if that artist is gay/lesbian, you’d have transexual surgery to be his/her (sex) partner. Phew~! This is quite a long description of law :P Anyway, I’d go lesbian for Angelina Jolie although I’m not such a fan of her. Oh, why am I defyingmy own law? T_T
Let’s get back to the pairing business before I drown myself into tears :p
I’m pretty sure that Steven Wilson is asexual. Or that he only desires trees. And that’s why he joked about a fictional band called Porcupine Tree (which later on cannot be taken as a joke, cause people started to take it seriously, and cause he fantasizes trees... and maybe porcupine too. Lol). But I slowly changed my mind when I saw this

Now I see their togetherness in a different light. Mikael has been a fan of Porcupine Tree since 1995. He never misses any releases of PT. He loves them all. Even the first album that he calls ‘funny’ (I agree with you, Mikael). And when Steven heard Opeth, he fell for this band too. In an interview, he answered the question “What’s so special with Opeth?” with Mikael’s musicality. I LOLed hard. =)) Oh well. Steven and Mikael have been working together for 10 years to make an album. But they manage to finish the album this year. My friend suspects that the album is just an excuse for them to be alone in studio. Lol.
Didn’t I say that I made someone in twitter support Steven/Mikael pairing? Didn’t I say that she has no clue of who Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt are? I should be sorry for her cause I made her think that someone actually wrote a Hetalia fanfiction about World War III. The war is caused by Israel vs Sweden fighting over UK. (That’s Aviv vs Mikael fighting over Steven. Lol)
