This mix has been in the works for ages, ever since I finished my last Dean/Cas mix. I had a first 'draft' of it done during the winter hiatus, but I was never quite happy with it. So I kept revamping it up until the season finale. In general, it just became more and more depressing, haha. I actually made a joke to my friend about how this mix is like something Sam would have made. Dean Winchester would never listen to Death Cab, but we all know they are Sam's favorite band.
"Here you go Dean, I made you this mixtape of songs that reminds me of you and your angel boyfriend."
"Bitch."
"Jerk."
But later, while driving in the impala, Dean would listen to the mix and a single manly tear would roll down his cheek.
"Oh [insert singer here] you so get me. It's as if you wrote my life out in verse..."

Castiel is surprised to learn Dean doesn’t believe that he deserved to be saved.

Dean just doesn't get God.

Castiel has a problem. That problem is his fondness for one Dean Winchester.

Castiel knows this is too much to ask of Dean, but he has to anyway. No matter what Castiel says, Dean refuses to believe that he is the hero in this tale.

When the prophet Chuck sees Sam and Lilith's encounter at the motel, Dean breaks down and asks Castiel for help.

Castiel is dragged back to Heaven.

Castiel was so sure the right thing to do was follow the orders of Heaven. But that was until Dean rejected paradise. That was until Dean pleaded for his help. That was until Dean could no longer look him in the eye.

You have all the prayers of my loose heart
Castiel gives up everything he has ever known in order to fight by Dean’s side. As the archangel Raphael strikes Cas down, he prays that his act of rebellion was enough to save to souls of both Winchester boys.

Lucifer has risen. Dean lays all the blame on Sam because he doesn’t want to face the fact that deep down he truly blames himself. He’s too tired to feel guilty.

Castiel gave everything up for Dean. Cut off from his heaven, he begins his search for God.

The two of them prepare to capture and interrogate the archangel Raphael. Odds are Castiel will be dead come the morning. Dean sets out to make sure his last night on Earth is worth it.

But my mind holds the key
You're still next to me
Castiel finds he is glad when they flee the whorehouse. The angel is confused, but strangely happy, as Dean flings his arm around his shoulder, laughing like a maniac and spewing backhanded complements. Chastity was lovely, but she wasn’t the one he envisioned this night with.
14. Bright Eyes - No One Would Riot For Less
[Dean]
So love me now
Hell is coming
It’s the way Dean’s last nights on Earth tend to go. The sex wasn’t a surprise, not really. What surprised him was when he realized how long they had been headed to this place. What surprised him was how he had wanted this ever since he had met the one who dragged him out of the pit. What surprised him was how he really didn’t want to lose Castiel tomorrow.
15. Loney, Dear - I Fought The Battle Of Trinidad & Tobago
[Castiel]

I've been to heaven and I've been to hell over you
I've been a loser and I've been a fool over you
For better or worse, Cas and Dean have rewritten the rules of their own story. The odds may be against them, but together they are going to try to save the world.

Dean wakes up five years into a post-apocalyptic future he never wanted to see. Dean hates to see what Cas has become. He hates to see what he, himself, has become. He has no idea how he let this happen. Dean returns to 2009 determined to not make the same mistakes.

[Castiel]

Your ears are wrecking

You wish you felt better

But at least
You can do no wrong in my eyes
Ellen and Jo are dead. The Colt failed to take out Lucifer. Castiel can tell that Dean’s faith is hanging on by a thread.

Dean realizes the influence he holds over Cas. The angel has become more human by the day and Dean is worried they are still on the path to the future he saw in 2014.
19. Grizzly Bear - Don't Ask (Final Fantasy Remix)

You suggest the struggle goes both ways

Since that night after the whorehouse, Cas has had many more similar encounters with Dean. They rarely speak about it.

Dean is just so tired.

Castiel can tell that Dean has very nearly given up. He just hopes they can find God before Dean gives into Michael.

All sparks will burn out in the end
While in Heaven, Dean and Sam learn that God is on Earth. However, he will not be helping them anymore than he already has. They relay the message to Cas.
23. Horse Feathers - Father
[Castiel]

They have seeped to son
No amount of wishing
For grace to be regained or won
Castiel has lost his faith in God.
24. Calexico - Black Heart
[Dean]

Spring is rusted shut, faith's coiled and cracked

Burnt though and ashen
For a moment, Dean gives up. He prepares to say ‘yes’ to Michael.
25. Grizzly Bear - Shift (Alternate Version)

But when push comes to shove, this is getting old

I wouldn't have it any other way
After Dean’s complete disregard of everything the angel gave up for him, Castiel almost loses the faith he had in the hunter. But he still goes with them to the warehouse as he has nothing left but the Winchesters. He’ll fight until the end, or else it was all worth nothing.

Castiel has been missing since the day Michael took Adam as his vessel.

Castiel is pleasantly surprised when Dean refuses to say ‘yes’ to Michael in the end. He is reminded of why he has believed in Dean all this time. Why he believed in the Winchesters. The end of the world is still coming and he may be practically human now, but at least he’s facing the oncoming storm with Dean, Sam, and Bobby.

Sam saves the world. He, Lucifer, Adam, and Michael are all locked away beneath the Earth. The apocalypse has been averted. Castiel returns to Heaven and Dean returns to Lisa. Dean is trying to live the normal life Sam asked of him, but he knows he would pack up and return to the road if the angel ever showed up at his front door asking him to. Maybe one day he would.
