Welcome to the fanmix that ate my life. I really struggled when I set out to make this mix whether I wanted to have it be a Dean/Cas mix or just simply a Castiel mix. Even though I have tons of songs I associate with Dean, I’ve never wanted to make a proper fanmix for him because at the end of the day, the character himself would probably hate 95% of the music I would put on it. And I know that’s silly, but honestly could you picture Dean Winchester listening to Fleet Foxes at maximum volume in the Impala? No, of course you can’t. A Sam mix? No problem. A Castiel mix? Throw on some Sufjan Stevens and call it a day. But a proper Dean mix? That was my challenge.
So did I dig through my classic rock and pick songs more Dean-suitable, not just lyrically but musically as well? Nope.
Instead I just said “Meh.” and stayed true my sentimental-folky-moody (and just a little bit electronic) heart. Besides, at the end of the day post-Hell Dean is a different kind of Dean Winchester. If he can spend his time wallowing then he can also spend his time listening to the Great Lake Swimmers.

Three months after his death, Dean wakes up in a pine box six feet underground. The only mark left on his body is a handprint seared into his shoulder.
Dean: Who are you?
Castiel: I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition.

Dean finally meets who dragged him out of the pit. He is nothing like he was expecting.
Dean: And why would an angel rescue me from Hell?
Castiel: Good things do happen, Dean.
Dean: Not in my experience.
Castiel: What’s the matter? You don’t think you deserve to be saved?
3. The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldier
I'm through ripping myself off
I'm done ripping myself off

The toy broken boy soldier
Dean finds his way back into the family business: saving people, hunting things. He may be broken, be he can still fight.
Castiel: Tell me something Dean, when your father gave you an order, didn’t you obey?
Dean: Well, sorry boys, looks like the plans have changed.
Uriel: You think you can stop us?
Dean: No, but if your going to smite this whole town, then your going to have to smite us with it because we are not leaving.

Castiel’s worldview is crumbling. He is beginning to question his orders, beginning to have doubts. But there are still two things he believes in: the apocalypse is on the horizon and that Dean Winchester will be the one to save them all.
Castiel: I’m not a “hammer,” as you say. I have questions. I have doubts. I don’t know what is right and what is wrong anymore. Whether you passed or failed here. But in the coming months you will have more decisions to make. I don’t envy the weight that is on your shoulders, Dean. I truly don’t.

The angels ask Dean to do the one thing he never wanted to do again.
Dean: You do not want me doing this, trust me.
Castiel: Want it? No. But I’ve been told we need it.
Dean: You ask me to open that door and walk through it? You will not like what walks out.

I'd get him to swap our places
Castiel knows this is too much to ask of Dean.
Castiel: For what it’s worth, I would give anything not to have you do this.

No matter what Castiel says, Dean refuses to believe that he is the hero in this tale. He’s tired. He’s broken and sees no way of being fixed.
Castiel: I know our fate rests with you.
Dean: Then you guys are screwed. I can't do it, Cas, it's too big. Alastair was right. I'm not all here. I'm not strong enough. I guess I'm not the man either of our dads wanted me to be. Find someone else. It's not me.
8. Explosions in the Sky - Catastrophe & the Cure
[INSTRUMENTAL]
Dean is beginning to trust Cas more and more. One of these days he might begin to consider him an actual friend. And Dean Winchester didn’t have many of those.
Castiel: My superiors have begun to question my sympathies.
Dean: Your sympathies?
Castiel: I was getting to close to the humans in my charge. You. They feel I’ve begun to express emotions. Doorways to doubt.
9. Devandra Banhart - Inaneil

Castiel has begun to have more faith in Dean then he does in his own garrison. He appears in the eldest Winchester’s dream in order to finally prove that loyalty.
Castiel: We need to talk.
Dean: I’m dreaming, aren’t I?
10. Sufjan Stevens - To Be Alone With You
You gave up a wife and a family
You gave your goals
To be alone with me
Dean is reminded that Castiel’s body is not actually his. That his vessel is a man named Jimmy Novak. A man that had his own life. His own family. And that he had to give that all up in order to serve heaven.
Castiel: I want to make sure you understand: you won’t die. Or age. This last year was painful for you. Picture a hundred. Or a thousand more like it.
Jimmy: It doesn’t matter. You take me. Just take me.
Castiel: As you wish.
11. Patrick Wolf - Don’t Say No
So now I don't say nothing at all
I just bow my head to the battle
A thousand miles above our heads they are bleeding
Mighty currents upon the day
If you're brave enough you'll just let it happen
If you’re brave enough you'll just succumb
Don’t say no to it
After being dragged back and reprogrammed in Heaven, Castiel tells Dean to give himself over to the plans they have for him.
Castiel: Stand up and accept your role. You are the one who will stop it.
Dean: If I do this, Sammy doesn’t have to?
Castiel: If it gives you comfort to see it that way.

Dean has had just about enough of being ordered around by the angels. He would have made an effort to cut ties with them a long time ago if it wasn’t for the strange fondness he feels for the one he’s come to know as Cas.
Bobby: Correct me if I’m wrong, but you willingly signed up to be the angel’s bitch? I’m sorry, do you prefer sucker? After everything you’ve said about them, now you trust them?
13. Grizzly Bear - He Hit Me
He hit me
And it felt like a kiss
He hit me
But it didn't hurt me
If he didn't care for me
I could have never made him mad
But he hit me
And I was glad
Castiel was so sure the right thing to do was follow the orders of Heaven. But that was until Dean rejected paradise. That was until Dean pleaded for his help. That was until Dean could no longer look him in the eye.
Dean: This is simple, Cas. No more crap about being a good soldier. There's a right and there's a wrong here and you know it. Look at me! You know it. You were gonna help me once, weren't you? You were gonna warn me about all this before they dragged you back to Bible camp. Help me, now, please.

Castiel gives up everything he has ever know in order to fight by Dean’s side.
Castiel: What would you have me do?
Dean: If there's anything worth dying for... this is it.
15. M83 - Let Men Burn Stars
[INSTRUMENTAL]
As the archangel strikes Castiel down, he prays that his act of rebellion was enough to save to souls of both Winchester boys.
Castiel: I’ll hold him off. I’ll hold them all of. Just stop Sam.
16. The Divine Comedy - Death of a Supernaturalist

Only you and I have realized exactly what it means
Castiel gave everything up for Dean. Cut off from his heaven, he’s beginning to find himself questioning if he made the right choice.
Castiel: I killed two angels this week. My brothers. I’m hunted. I’ve rebelled. And I did it, all of it, for you. And you failed.

Dean isn’t sure he believes in God, but he has come to believe in Castiel.

Dean wants to loose himself in the hunt. He thinks it will be better for everyone involved if he cuts all his ties. Only it’s a surprise to him when he realizes the one tie he really didn’t want to cut was to Castiel.
Dean: I’ve spent so much time chained to my family. But now that I’m alone? Hell, I’m happy.

Castiel’s search for God has only led him to more questions.
Raphael: God? Didn’t you hear? He’s dead, Castiel. Dead.
Castiel: You’re lying.
Raphael: Did it ever occur to you that maybe Lucifer raised you?
Castiel: No.

For better or worse, Cas and Dean have rewritten the rules of their own story. The odds may be against them, but together they are going to try to save the world. As long as they don’t destroy each other first.
Castiel: If it’s true, and if you are still set on the insane task of killing the devil, this is how we do it.
Dean: Okay, where do we start?

Dean wakes up five years into a post-apocalyptic future he never wanted to see.
Zachariah: Three days, Dean. Three days to see where this course of action takes you. This is what happens to the world if you continue to say “no” to Michael.

This is the path that took Dean to become the man he meets in 2014.
Dean: You mean you’re gonna feed your friends into a meat grinder? Cas too? You would use their deaths as a diversion? Man, something is broken in you.

Meeting Dean Winchester was both the worst and the greatest thing to ever happen in Castiel’s ever-so-long life. It led him down this path of self-destruction, true, but it also gave him fleeting moments in which it all felt worth it. And for that, he was going to follow him to the end of the world.
Future-Castiel: Are you saying we walk in straight up the driveway, past all the demons and the Croats and we shoot the Devil?
Future-Dean: Yes
Future-Castiel: Okay If you don’t like reckless, I can use insouciant maybe…
Future-Dean: Are you coming?
Future-Castiel: Of course.

After the angels abandoned Earth, living life in excess was the only way Cas was able to stumble through his days.
Dean: What happened to you?
Future-Castiel: Life.

The things we do just to keep ourselves alive
Dean hates to see what Castiel has become. He hates to see what he, himself, has become. He has no idea how he let this happen.
Future-Castiel: Except I used to belong to a much better club. I mean, now I’m powerless. I’m hapless. I’m hopeless. I mean, why the hell not bury myself in women and decadence, right? It’s the end, baby. That’s what decadence is for. Why not bang a few gongs before the lights go out?

This is the way the world ends. This is the way Sam says yes.

Future-Dean: Sam didn’t die in Detroit. He said yes.

Dean returns to 2009 determined to not make the same mistakes.
Lucifer: See you in five years, Dean.

Dean is not going to let himself drag down Cas anymore that he already has. He couldn’t bear to see the broken man he met in 2014 ever again.
Dean: Don't ever change.

So no one gets worried, no
Dean is finally ready to admit that he needs Cas. And that he needs his brother Sam. That he needs everyone he can get, because there are so few people left on his side. He would be an idiot to keep pushing them away. And so he’s finally going to start letting people in.
Sam: So what do we do now?
Dean: We make our own future.
