Pepper Potts: the Compton waitress edition

PSA: If you're looking at this thinking, gee, this person sure looks like she hates women, she even calls herself misogynist for swapping in a male actor for G.Pal! then maybe you should re-examine your ironic faculties before you start flaming me. I mean, come on, think about it: most misogynists wouldn't self-identify as such. In fact, ( Read more... )

i was so confused, at first; several people on my flist have been talking about shia labouf/las vegas bandom gaymo at great length on my flist, and i JUST watched his spot on last night's david letterman, so i saw this and was like, WHAT WHAT. but askljdhaslkdhaskdhlkasd, paigealicous: this is hilarious and amazing. I LOOK FORWARD TO THIS THESIS, OKAY.

Dooodz, Shia was totally on SNL with My Morning Jacket. I can't believe you didn't watch!

Also, the descriptor shia labeouf/las vegas bandom gaymo confuses me so profoundly that I can't even begin to comprehend. Las Vegas like the tv show Las Vegas? How does bandom fit in? What?

REGARDLESS, point me to this letterman spot!

Oh dude, I totally found that fic, and it is fucking BRILLIANT. Thanks for bringing the whole universe together into one little circle-jerk loveball, keri.

I most love the part where it's so obvious that he'd rather stab Letterman than hear another fucking word about his black black lungs. :!

I keep forgetting it wasn't him, I've so efficiently erased Gwyneth from my mind. Plus, the kid has a long career of being a smexy sidekick. He was even considered for Jimmy Olsen in Superman Returns!

Obviously, I am sinking into this far too rapidly for my own health.

Everyone always says, "Yeah, but look how far comic book movies have come." Like the fact that they're getting better in terms of plot and characterization is supposed to somehow ameliorate the fact that the entire genre is based on a fundamental misogyny.

I dunno. When I figure out how to reconcile the two I'll let you know. Maybe by then I'll have figured out an answer to the eternal question: how the hell can I, as a feminist, write slash?

'it's about the deconstruction of typical m/f relationships to look to the heart of what a relationship could be like when placed on equal footing, gender-role-wise

Yeah, that's totally what I always fall back on. What would sex be like if there wasn't an automatic tendency towards power struggles? If it wasn't socially mandated that a woman sucking a man's cock is either a whore or a virgin degrading herself into a whore? Ugh, I can't even think about it sometimes.

I wonder why I don't gravitate towards f/f as much as m/m. I can't argue that the men are hotter, because we only see attractive women onscreen, ergo. So I think it's because my slash is pretty emotionally-driven, and I write it because I like the characters. And there are no complex female characters.

Which brings us back to the beginning. ALACK.

Hi, I'm enjoying your Helpmate fic, but your explanation of it baffles me. Is

You know what gets rid of misogyny? Getting rid of women.

a serious assertion? I mean, you see the flaw in that logic, right?

And

Pepper and some trash help out Iron Man
At Iron Man's insistence, Pepper helps some vag, but really he's doing it for Tony.

--just, what.

Is misogyny in comics and, you know, fannish LJ posts something you actually care about, or is it a big joke? You confuse me.

Yeah, I recognize the flaw in that logic, in the same way I recognize the flaw in the logic of m/m slash fiction written almost entirely by women. It's an ironic statement, because I can't participate in fandom without being wholeheartedly ironic about it. The cognitive dissonance a feminist slash writer has to deal with is fairly killer, as I'm sure you know.

Actually, you know, I've never really had that problem. Maybe it's because I tend to put my queer identity ahead of my female identity, and my queer identity thinks slash is totally awesome.

I find your worldview strange but I'm sure the reverse is true as well.
