PSA: If you're looking at this thinking, gee, this person sure looks like she hates women, she even calls herself misogynist for swapping in a male actor for G.Pal! then maybe you should re-examine your ironic faculties before you start flaming me. I mean, come on, think about it: most misogynists wouldn't self-identify as such. In fact, ( Read more... )

Everyone always says, "Yeah, but look how far comic book movies have come." Like the fact that they're getting better in terms of plot and characterization is supposed to somehow ameliorate the fact that the entire genre is based on a fundamental misogyny.

I dunno. When I figure out how to reconcile the two I'll let you know. Maybe by then I'll have figured out an answer to the eternal question: how the hell can I, as a feminist, write slash?

'it's about the deconstruction of typical m/f relationships to look to the heart of what a relationship could be like when placed on equal footing, gender-role-wise

Yeah, that's totally what I always fall back on. What would sex be like if there wasn't an automatic tendency towards power struggles? If it wasn't socially mandated that a woman sucking a man's cock is either a whore or a virgin degrading herself into a whore? Ugh, I can't even think about it sometimes.

I wonder why I don't gravitate towards f/f as much as m/m. I can't argue that the men are hotter, because we only see attractive women onscreen, ergo. So I think it's because my slash is pretty emotionally-driven, and I write it because I like the characters. And there are no complex female characters.

Which brings us back to the beginning. ALACK.

Random person here, don't mind me. Got here through the fic link on one of the Iron Man communities.

I've always gone with the excuse of 'it's about the deconstruction of typical m/f relationships to look to the heart of what a relationship could be like when placed on equal footing, gender-role-wise.'

That's interesting that you point that out. The other day I was browsing through someone's LJ that was full of slash fans and classic movies fans, and they were commenting on a scene between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart.
Poster 1: It's like reading really, really good slash.
Poster 2: LOL! I hadn't thought of it that way before, but you know, you're right! LB in this role is so sexually confident and butch, not the typical romantic heroine at all. Women of '30s and '40s movies tended to be pretty feisty, but she was one of the best. Barbara Stanwyck is another of my favourites in that vein.
Poster 3: 40s women totally ruled! I swear, if there were more female characters like that, I'd wouldn't be half the slasher I am.

Thoughts?
