[Action 1]

[As dawn sweeps across the blasted remains of Mayfield, you may find a short, fat man dressed entirely in white swaying through the rubble. At first, it might look like he's swaying due to injury and might fall, but he keeps reasserting himself. After a few moments, it becomes obvious he isn't hurt. Isn't injured in the least. [Zuko whirls, dropping defensively into a fighting stance and squaring his shoulders. That he knows this person doesn't make him safe.]

I probably have no answers for you.

Ah.

[The Major drops his makeshift knife to his side, holding up a hand in apology.]

I'm very sorry, sir. You must forgive me, as you're still...well, a bit new. I haven't gotten used to recognizing you yet.

...Really.

[Well, he lacks his telltale scar, but still. He straightens, not at ease but still willing to talk.]

Tell me what you know.

[The Major shrugs helplessly, shaking his head a little as he looks at Zuko.]

Not much, I'm afraid! I know as much as you do!

Although...the devastation looks like it would have been done by a bombing raid. Most likely nuclear.

Burned to the ground... this is senseless. They can't have done this while we were sleeping.

Mmm. You'll find things like this happen quite often. Not to this scale, but this is within the nature of the town to be able to pull off such...miracles.

As for senseless....that's within the eye of the beholder.

You find this sensible? This... there's not a justification. not one that I can imagine.

It's not so much senseless as it is...over-dramatic.

The message is clear: either we may have Mayfield, or we may have this. They're showing us what will happen if we continue to be "ungrateful".

They can't expect us to praise them when this is what they do to us.

[They don't have simulations on Zuko's world, so he's still puzzling over how it could have happened.]

I refuse to be grateful to a violent kidnapper.

You would be surprised, sir! Not as many people have your willpower. People, when faced with adversity such as this, can come to....respect their kidnappers, when shown kindness after harshness. Even love them. It's an odd fact of human nature.

...I can concede respect.

[That is said a bit more softly, a bit more resigned. Immolation is one way to earn respect.]

They have power, and they've proved it. But what, they show us a burnt wasteland and then expect us to like their other prison? That's stupid!

Ah. Simple.

Because you are from a different world and culture, like many here, this sight won't have as much....meaning to you, as it does for those from worlds and cultures similar to it.

I will assume "nuclear warfare" and "mutual destruction" are terms you are not familiar with. Is this correct?

[Zuko shakes his head.]

No. I know what war and destruction are, though; this... seems like something one of my father's generals would do.

[Because it can't be Ozai, ever. Everything he does is just fine.]

Ah.

What you see before you is, in many ways, the greatest fear of many people from my world. During the end of the Second Great War in my world, which involved most of the nations on our planet, a weapon was developed called the nuclear bomb, which dealt devastation unheard of at the time. The weapon was employed only twice, and put a quick end to the war. After the sight of the destruction, the nations swore to never use it again.

[The Major chuckles a little as he takes his glasses off, wiping them a bit on on his clothes.]

Which didn't stop the nations from continuing to develop these weapons. Tension ran high, as the two great superpowers at the time, The United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics began an arms race in development. People were certain that the two would go to war, and would fight this war with nuclear weapons. If this were to happen? Then it would be mutual destruction, and everything would be wiped out. Even if they bombed each other alone, the amount of radiation and other things ( ... )

[Zuko frowns, looking back out over the wasteland and thinking.]

How are they showing us this? And it doesn't matter to most of us, since we don't come from here. What happens on this world doesn't matter to me when I go back to mine.

Those weapons, though... how do they work? It sounds like something only a non-bender would come up with.

[The Major shrugs, a bemused smile playing across his face.]

How? I couldn't say. Magic, illusions, projections, virtual reality, holograms. Who knows.

If you get back to your world.

...Mmm. I could give you a basic idea, but I can't explain the fine science and details to you. I'm not a scientist. Do you know what a bomb, or explosive devices in general, are?
