Not only did our softball team make it to the play-offs this year (everyone makes the playoffs), we actually made it to the second week of playoffs. Yesterday, we had a game at 5:30pm. If we won that game, we were to switch fields and play another game at 6:30pm. And if we won that game, our final match would occur next week.
Coolio!
Our regular pitcher was out, so another guy filled in. He doesn't come to all the games, but is usually in the outfield when he does.
How'd it go? Well, I could provide a play-by-play, but let me copy-and-paste instead. (My edits/comments appear in brackets.)
"Dear IT team and others,
As some of you are aware, last night during our softball game, [the replacement pitcher] was accidentally hit in the head with a baseball bat. [I didn't see what happened--we were mid-transition and I was already in the field--but heard that he bent down to retrieve a ball or something that was inconveniently located right behind a guy from the other team who was taking a practice swing.]
He never lost consciousness and stayed alert the whole time. He was attended to immediately on the field by doctors from the medical center who also play in the league. [Someone from the other team ran across to the field where they were playing their 5:30pm game to fetch them.]
The paramedics arrived and he was taken to the hospital [conveniently located right across the street] for treatment of a cut and for a CAT scan. Some of us were able to keep him company and visit him during this time. His wife and family arrived shortly. [I didn't even know he was married. Didn't even occur to me until a freaked-out woman standing next to me pointed out his ring and asked where his wife was. When asked who should be called, he gave the team manager the phone number for his brother. Amusing side-note: before leaving, he asked the guy who would soon become the replacement replacement pitcher to take a 'gore and all' photo of him.]
They held him overnight, in ICU, for observation and are planning to release him today to a room where they still want to continue observe him for 1 or 2 more days. [This was a surprise. I figured they'd keep him overnight and release him today. I was also half-worried that today's update would be that his brain had swelled and he'd died overnight.]
He and his wife say he is feeling fine and they are thankful for everyone’s thoughts and support. We do not have a room # for him yet but I will make that information available when we receive it.
Thanks,
[the replacement pitcher's boss, who gave him the shirt off his back to bleed on and accompanied him to the hospital]"
Funnily enough, because of yesterday's incident, the replacement pitcher's boss lost his title as 'Person worst injured during a softball game,' an honorific he earned after being beaned in the head by a softball as he was running from first to second. It was a late game, and the umpire let it continue on after dark. The person throwing the ball couldn't see well enough to avoid hitting him. I've recently learned that it's an automatic out when a runner gets hit by the ball (happened to another girl on the team); talk about insult added to injury.
After the guys went to the hospital, we decided to finish out the game, but we lost some steam. It's a shame, too, because we could've won. We were only three runs down, and there were two guys on base when I got up to bat. Unfortunately, I struck out, and that was all she wrote.
