supplements [again]

Having finished the course of rx-strength vitamin d a few weeks ago, I finally decided to follow up on the doc's advice to get myself a heavy duty d supplement. While I was at it, I got an iron supplement, to see what that would do. The only times my iron level has been an issue were a couple of occasions when it fell below the baseline required for blood donation. It was normal at my last physical. But someone mentioned that whenever they have cravings for deep fried meat, it meant their iron was low, and something in my head went *ding*. So I figured to give it a try. (I guess I could also just ingest a bowl of leafy greens every now and again, but where's the fun in that?)

I eat yogurt several days a week, and have lately taken to using real cream in my coffee. I wonder if this means I don't need to worry about a calcium supplement. (Being slow as I am, it took me this long to notice that non-dairy creamer is all corn syrup solids. So I suggested to LeRoi, who still makes our coffee each workaday morning, that we switch to Half&Half. I bought the first batch and got non-fat. At the end of the carton, he asked how I liked the new mix and I said "needs more fat." So now we're using regular Half&Half and my taste buds are much happier.)

Otherwise, I've still got maybe 1/3 of a bottle of multivitamins left. And every now and again I get a fleeting thought that maybe I should start up with the flax seed oil again. But I don't think I'll bother with that, or any sort of joint health supplement (sticking with ginger or turmeric rather than TriFlex or FlexMend), unless I decide to run another race. My knees have been feeling pretty good lately. I'm rather surprised by this, but take it as an indication that I may be doing something right.

This reminds me to mention that I've decided to (try to) implement the same rule with TKB classes that I had with running: do not do this two days in a row. To that end, I was determined to make it to a TKB class yesterday (rather than going on Friday and then again on Saturday). I missed the 5:30pm class, so ended up attending the 6:30pm. This worked out awesomely.

This is the second time in a week that I've accidentally stumbled upon an awesome TKB class. With the exception of the Saturday morning class, which I attend just because it's there, I usually try to go to the classes where there's more KB and less T. (I initially refused to take TKB classes because they seemed too much like aerobics.) I like the instructors who seem to have some martial arts background, so put in fewer of the weird dance-y elements that are built into the standard choreography.

Queen B wanted to check out a Tribal Belly Dance class last Saturday morning, so I knew I wouldn't be attending my regular TKB class. So determined to attend the Friday evening class. The regular teacher was out and the sub was a woman whose voice sounded familiar but whom I couldn't place. Turned out to be Mary Ann the Smiling Sadistic Pilates Instructor. I loved her pilates classes, but never got around to taking a TKB class from her. And now she's in school in LA so not teaching up here at all. Will definitely look for her when she gets back.

Yesterday's 6:30pm class had its normal instructor, Terri. She spent the first few minutes with the music off just demonstrating form. Then at the end of class she had us do partner work. One partner held the target up at shoulder-height; the other kicked it. Then we switched. It was lovely just to have that time to practice the movement without worrying about falling behind on the choreography. (By contrast, the Saturday instructor always says it doesn't matter what you do as long as you're sweating.)

I love love love partner work in a fitness class. Half the reason I fell in love with Edna's yoga class is that she would have us do partner poses. (We don't do them anymore and I haven't gotten around to asking why. I wonder if people complained.)

Terri's class is rather inconvenient time-wise. If I keep attending, I may never be on time for Wednesday night dance class again. But that may be a risk I'm willing to take. We'll see.

health, fitness
