Two weeks ago, I headed off to Washington DC to take care of a Russian Legal Thing. The train wound up running very late, but things worked out at the end. After I've made it to the embassy, I headed toward a bus stop for route D2, which would take me to the Washington Metro Red Line, which would take me to Union Station.

As I headed south, the blocky apartment buildings quickly gave way to something more old-fashioned. Even, dare I say, picturesque.

The City of St. Petersburg government acquired all the of Metrostroy, a construction company in charge of building new lines and stations for the city's subway. Just as Chicago 'L' trains stop for no reason every once in while, so do subway trains in Russian cities. The only difference is that the riders don't even get a canned announcement or an explanation, which, as tweelore  will tell you, can be a bit unnerving.
