"What is it with your ex-boyfriends today" - A scene from Boystown life
Dec 23, 2016 23:00
Earlier today, at around 8:00 PM, I was walking Lakeview, through the part that, depending on who you ask, may or may not be part of Boystown [Note](it depends on whether you count Halsted Street or the entire area around the historic Chicago Pride Parade route). As I crossed Belmont and kept walking north on Broadway, past the Walgreens, I noticed a white man and a white woman who looked in their late 40s-early 50s and wore the identical gray jackets and very similar black hats. A black guy wearing a very similar jacket and a very similar hat was standing by the store entrance. As the pair approached the store, he shouted at them, saying hello and asking the guy how he's been. The duo ignored him.
As I walked past him, I heard him mumbling to himself. And I realized that he was clearly very drunk.
I figured that the black guy just thought they were someone he knew, and the duo decided to ignore him because, well, that's what you do when a strange drunk person shouts at you.
Which is why I was completely caught off guard by what happened next.
As the duo walked away, the woman addressed her companion.
"What the hell is it with your ex-boyfriends today?" she asked.
"I don't know," the guy sounded both annoyed and bemused. "Guess it's the holidays."
