Fanmix: I'll See You In My Dreams (The Ghost & Mrs Muir - Lucy Muir/Captain Daniel Gregg)

May 12, 2010 01:12

I made a fanmix because I'm obsessing over these two. They're just so pretty and tragic and snarky and all-around-OTP-ish. This mix is based on the 1947s movie with Gene Tierney and Sexy Rexy Rex Harrison and not the beautiful book or tv series from the 60s, although I guess most of these songs would still fit (the book and the show have a less tragic feeling than the movie imo).

I'll See You In My Dreams - The Ghost and Mrs Muir

About Time (acoustic version)… Elbow
(The Ghost & Mrs Muir)

Love is simple
Only in books, in song

- a ghost in love with a woman, a woman in love with a ghost - who said love is simple?

Summersong... The Decemberists
(Gull Cottage)

Summer arrives with a length of lights
Summer blows away
And quietly gets swallowed by a wave
It gets swallowed by a wave

- Lucy Muir moves to the seaside with her young daughter Anna (and son, if you think of the tv series) after her husband - who she loved, but not loved - has died. Gull Cottage, her little house, is haunted by a ghost of a roguish, but kind, sea captain (who did, however, spook all the previous tenants away). She lets him "stay", but he has to promise only to show himself to Lucy (according to him, children won't see him because they're too young).

Chasing Cars… Snow Patrol
(Daniel ⟶ Lucy)

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes
They're all I can see

- Captain Gregg, instantly taken with Lucy, falls for her free spirit and independence (that she doesn't take any of his his s/t). I love the idea that they can't touch, I just imagine them lying on grass, looking at the sky.

I Could Be There For You… Eisley
(Lucy; Lucy ⟶ Daniel)

You're part mystery
And partly drawn, drawn to all things breathing
So ring ring ring ring, keep on breathing
Ring ring ring ring, keep on believing
If you open your door, oh
Would you open your door?
I could be there for you

- When Lucy's investments dry up and she can't afford to pay the rent for the little cottage anymore, Captain Gregg convinces her to write his memoirs, revealing his backstory to her (racy story telling apparently although most he made up to sell the book). Daniel's stories and mysteries slowly make Lucy fall in love with him.

And So It Goes… Billy Joel
(Daniel)

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

- Because both of them know that their love is doomed, Daniel convinces Lucy to find love in the real world, knowing it will break his heart. When she meets a charming writer of children stories in London, Daniel gets jealous and eventually sees that Lucy can only be happy when she starts living again. While she sleeps he convinces her that he was just a dream and vanishes.

S.H.E… IAMX
(Lucy)

You have been left alone
The creature of innocence
Forget, forget
With the secret harmonic emotion

- Lucy falls in love with Miles Farley, but it turns out to be that he's married with two children and that it's not the first time he woed a fellow writer. Lucy is heartbroken. She spends the rest of her life with her maid Martha living in Gull Cottage.

The World Has Left Us Behind… Samuel Sim

instrumental

Rain… Patty Griffin
(Lucy ⟶ Daniel)

Now I don't wanna beg you baby
For something maybe you could never give
I'm not looking for the rest of your life
I just want another chance to live

- Anna returns to visit her mother and to introduce her fiancé (who is a Navy lieutenant). She tells her mother a story about a sea captain who used to haunt Gull Cottage when she was a child (and on whom she had a crush), but then one day left when her mother met a new man. This rekindles Lucy's faint memories of Daniel and she wishes for his return.

World Spins Madly On… The Weepies
(Lucy ⟶ Daniel)

The night is here and the day is gone
And the world spins madly on
I thought of you and where you'd gone
And the world spins madly on

- Lucy is waiting for her life to go by. She dies peacefully in her sleep, sitting in her favourite chair.

Rule the World… Take That
(Daniel ⟶ Lucy)

If walls break down, I will comfort you
If angels cry, oh I'll be there for you
You've saved my soul
Don't leave me now

- Daniel appears in front of her at the time of her death and lifts her (young) soul out of her body. They walk hand and hand down the stairs and out of the cottage (into the sky...). This is such an emotional and beautiful scene in the movie, it makes me cry everytime.

Playing Love… Ennio Morricone

instrumental

I'll See You In My Dreams... Ingrid Michaelson
(Lucy ⟶ Daniel)

Though the days are long
Twilight sings a song
Of a happiness that used to be
Soon my eyes will close (soon my eyes will close)
Soon I'll find repose
And in dreams, you're always near to me

- a short coda song, Lucy's dreams and thoughts when she died. I decided to put this at the end instead of before Rule the World because it is supposed to be like an afterthought and it's a parallel to the first song.
