Stopped Trains

You don't know why you've been pulled here and you are not going to be told, either. You don't know which year is it, and you don't even know where "here" is. It could be anywhere in the world. But it looks like a bomb hit this place and it was forgotten forever.

You are slammed into this world just like you have been born again. You don't have any notion of anything. All you know is that you are in a clearly abandoned train station - sure, it's huge, but whoever did the decoration could have been a little nicer. There are nine platforms, each with six trains with twelve compartments. These compartments are tight shut, and your card-key only opens one.

You can try to find a way out, but there is none. You try to explore. The sun is setting and bathes the apocalyptic city in its reddish glow, and the lampposts flicker and buzz around 19.00 - seven PM. To your surprise, there are people outside. They look so very normal. And you ask around, "where am I?" to the nearest person, but all he does is keep walking. You do this enough times to understand that they don't even know you're there. You bump into them, and they keep walking. You're a material ghost.

And then the sun sets and the city keeps moving, but this time, you can't bump into them because you have become something that you cannot touch. And around you everything blurs and turns to grey and turns to dark and soon you only see blurred images of people and the sound fades and the lights are only from the flickering lampposts.

Click, click, click, you hear from everywhere, scratch, scratch, hiss, sounds from your childhood nightmares begin to fill the heavy air. And you look behind you and you see things you don't want to see and you feel like you've stopped breathing and you hear your heart louder than ever before, and you look for light and you cling on to a lamppost like a prostitute would and you feel sick and unclean.

And you hear all sounds fade away. A grave voice coughs behind you and you turn around to see a tall figure hidden in the shadows.

"I once saw God," the tall man says, hidden in the shadows, smoking a cigarette. You can't see his face, you can't see anything but the dim light of the tip of the cigarette, burning fire, the smoke twirling like silk around the cold air. He stops for a drag.

"And He told me you would arrive."

You blink to make sure he's really there and then he's not.

"You'll be safe," he says again, this time against the nearest lamppost and yet the shadows still cling to him, "if you don't leave the lights. I am the Father, he who once met God. I am one of the Six, those who can walk in the Shadows. The Childes of Dark roam in the city when there is no light. They will engulf your being and you will become one of them once Touched. So stay in the light, child, and you will be safe. The only place they cannot reach is the Train Station. All the trains have stopped."

And then he leaves you with the click click clicks and the scratch scratch hisses and the dim light of the lamppost. You do not sleep, you wait until morning comes, and you finally come back to the world of colours and without the nightmare-ish sounds.

And you run to the train station and lock yourself in your compartment.
