Repeat offender

Apr 13, 2008 22:28

Had it been an isolated incident, I might not have posted here, but since the person who plagiarized my story is already listed on the profile of this comm as a known plagiarist, it appears to be a pattern. I don't like doing this, but I didn't like reading my story with whole new characters in the roles, either. :(

On April 7th, ilsaluvsrick posted a story ( Read more... )

I'm very sorry to hear about this. I'm going to contact her ASAP.

To the greater stop_plag community: I realize the fact that this is a repeat case in short order is upsetting. I'm really hoping that folks will refrain from flaming her, and instead help look through her other fic and see if there are other pieces that may have been plagiarized.

Thank you.

I recognized the username from the comm heroes_fic where they have five stories tagged as theirs. I don't see anything that I recognize as not original, but here's the link if someone else wants to take a look.

It can be found HERE.

I read through one of her stories - Fumble, found here - and some of the phrasing seemed so polished that it set off my alarm bells. I did some quick googling, and found that some of the phrases match key phrases in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I don't have a copy of the book, so I was forced to rely on the googlebooks preview - which is obviously an incomplete glimpse of the book. If anyone else has a copy, I'd be very interested to see if the longer monologues in Fumble match anything in ATGiB.

Here are screencaps of the phrases that pinged me, both in Fumble and in ATGiB:

I second Thuri's sentiments. And I'm afraid I was as taken in by her "apology" as everyone else.

She either has some serious issues, or her last apologies and claims of repentance were completely insincere, and either way, it's a shame.

But it's a sickening feeling, to see your words under someone else's name; to see your characters ripped out of their story and replaced with cut-out stand-ins. And the worst part of it is seeing other people compliment and praise her--and seeing her accept those praises as though she deserved them.

I'm sorry she did this. I'm sorry she hasn't learned. I'm sorry anyone out there is willing to claim something they didn't write as their own. It's tragic.

Thank you for posting, though. She can't sit pretty posting her lovely little apologies then go right on doing what she's always done. I know how you feel about posting here--I felt awkward doing it, too--but she shouldn't get away with this. So good for you.

I dislike doing this, but must add my name to the list of the plagiarized.

In her story, "Easy Does It," ilsaluvsrick did not wholesale copy but lifted several phrases and the overall gist of my Alias story, "Soap Opera." This was in October 2007.

I wrote her and asked if the copying was deliberate -- as most of the story was not my work, I was willing (in retrospect, foolishly) to believe that she had possibly not intended to do it. She said that it was not and said she would edit the story to amend it. As you can see by the links, she has not done so. (I didn't check on it then b/c I was moving apartments and extremely short on time.)

Obviously she learned nothing from this and abused my trust. I should not have brought this up with her privately and given her the chance to fix this, as she had no intention of doing so. I'm very disappointed -- we'd talked in the past and she seemed nice. So much for appearances.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Could you direct me to the specific phrases?

I want to just offer my shock and betrayal and deepest apologies to all of you.

I have had all of my credibility and all of my work compromised due to this and my sorrow is beyond words.

One very brief factual point for yahtzee63, and this is in no way an excuse, but ilsaluvsrick did in fact repost Easy Does It with many changes, here. Again, that in no way excuses this sort of behavior. I simply want to provide a full record.

And the revised version STILL includes text copied from my original story. UNBELIEVABLE.
