Having worked Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Lavender was grateful to have been given New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day off. As much as she loved her job, Lavender had very much welcomed the prospect of was essentially a four-day weekend. By some miracle, the extreme chill seemed to have gone, though it was still cold and a bit soggy. They had even managed to thaw the pipes and get some heat into the house, although it was by no means perfect. Finally, they had even managed to sleep in their own bed rather than camping out on the sofa in front of the fire.
Lavender had enjoyed a lazy morning in bed with Ron today, finally feeling as though she fit into her own skin again. Having felt on the verge of breaking down on Christmas Day at The Burrow, Lavender realised that perhaps she hadn’t been coping as well over the last couple of months as she’d thought she was.
She had never been particularly confident in her own academic abilities and so, scared that she would fail, had put in more hours at work and in her private studies than she had probably needed. Ron hadn’t really been working, either, what with all the Quidditch stuff, so perhaps a little of it had been compensating for that, too, even though they hadn’t been living together at the time. All that worry had taken its toll on her body, apparently, and even her monthly cycle had been affected. Not that Ron seemed to have noticed. Now, though, Lavender hoped that everything would just settle down.
With
Ernie and Eleanor’s wedding tonight, Lavender was looking forward to bringing in the New Year on a positive note, waking up feeling fairly cheerful and optimistic. She had even promised herself that she wouldn’t go and get stupidly jealous, though was sure she’d be able to get away with a few tears during the ceremony, even if she didn’t know the couple that well. With a few hours to get ready, Lavender began to hunt out the shoes that she wanted to wear, sure that she had put them in the wardrobe when she’d unpacked her shoes on Saturday.
She frowned as she found a shoebox and rattled it, not sure that it sounded like a pair of shoes. Taking off the lid, Lavender found a wrapped Christmas present, a blush rising to her cheeks as she realised what it was. For Christmas, she had bought Ron a set of cookery books, mostly curries and that sort of thing, but there had also been another present. Really, it was for both of them to share, but Lavender had hidden it away, not wanting to take it to The Burrow. It was an extremely private present and definitely something Lavender wouldn’t have wanted Molly Weasley to find by accident. Apparently, though, she’d hidden it so well that she’d forgotten about it until now.
“Ron?” Lavender called, present in her hands. “Are you busy? I’ve got something for you.”
