Valentine's Day was a silly excuse for a holiday. In fact, it wasn't so much a holiday as a marketing agent's wet dream. Buy these flowers, buy these balloons, buy this box of sweets, buy, buy, buy. Not only that, but pink and red was just a nauseating combination when it covered such large spaces in the supermarket and card shops. Hermione had always found the idea that there was supposedly one day a year when you were supposed to tell someone you loved them such a ridiculous concept. She told the people she cared about how she felt all the time. Maybe not with words, but with actions and hugs and smiles whenever possible ( ... )

Roger was grinning when the door began to open. When he looked at her, the grin slid almost comically from his face. She was leaning against the door, smiling at him and looking almost edible so naturally, he had to take a second to collect himself.

The dress hit her at about mid-thigh and he had to resist the urge to openly ogle her. The boots were...something. And her hair was down, dark and tumbling about her shoulders. He gave a start when he realised he was staring for a mite to long.

"Evening, Hermione." He leaned down, took her hand and kissed her cheek, then her lips lightly before he pulled back. "You look beautiful. Are you ready to go?"

Well, based on Roger's reaction, the dress no longer seemed inappropriate. She shifted as he stared at her, resisting the urge to tug the material down just so she had something to do with her hands, and tried not to analyze the fact that she was pleased by the way he was looking at her. It wasn't obvious, as Roger just really wasn't the type, but it was a subtle in a way she recognized. She blushed lightly and then decided to utilize the moment for a look of her own ( ... )

"Thanks," he mumbled at her compliment, then straightened. She Summoned her coat and he helped her into it before looking round her shoulder into the house to see if Harry or Ron were about. "Are they going to grill me, the first chance they get?" he asked, a light of humor in his eyes as they stepped outside.

"Nice try, Hermione," he said, smiling slightly and glancing at her as they started to walk. "I never told you where we were going. But it won't be too hard to figure out. I know you only like the puzzles you can solve. If you don't mind, we'll go on foot? Or I could just Apparate us there if you fancy."

Instead of walking with her to the street, Roger began to lead her towards his house and the river.

"I'm glad Harry's doing well. He seems to be enjoying it," she told him. "He was exhausted on Monday, but we adopted a puppy and that seemed to give him a bit of enthusiasm."

She listened to him and asked, "What sort of plan do you have in mind for setting up the business? Did you choose the location and speak with Jack yet? How much are you going to have to have as start-up capital? You should look into falsifying paperwork to get discounts with a Muggle supplier." She smiled wryly. "I don't mean lie, but if you can fill out an application for a DIY Muggle shop to get a discount for business owners, well, it's an option. I don't normally condone falsifying paperwork, but it wouldn't be lying."

He stopped walking, and she turned to face him. His grin was mischievous, which made her arch her brow and look at him with playful suspicion. "You can trust me," she said. "It might be tempting to sneak a look, but I'll be good, I suppose."

"Yeah, he likes it, I think. I mean, he cursed a fair bit, of course. But so did I, just starting out. Still do sometimes," he said sheepishly. "But yeah. It's good. You all got a puppy? That should make him happy. Puts things into perspective when you have someone depending on you like that. I've been meaning to visit the shelter, myself; I've always wanted a dog ( ... )

"You'd like a dog?" She smiled. "I think we can find one who likes you well enough to adopt you. Just let me know when you'd like to look, and we can go look ( ... )

"That'd be great," he said, grinning. "Maybe next week we can go to the shelter and one of them can pick me out ( ... )

"I wasn't going to argue," she denied, being silly for a moment and sticking her tongue out at him. "I'm not at all tough-as-nails. I used to be terribly emotional, you know? I've just grown up a lot in the last few years, as have many of us."

She laughed. "Right. How could I forget that part? It's a favorite in my plans for world domination," she quipped. "Of course, since you are my beck-and-call man, I suppose I could have peeled grapes any old time."

"I quite like seafood, though, honestly, I'm not overly picky about food. As long as it's edible, I can eat most anything," she admitted. "After years of worrying about meals more often than not, any particular habits I had about food seemed to fade when it came to eating or starving. That's a good thing, though, as it means I'm rather easy to please. About food, at least."

The meal went by quickly as they ate silently save for occasional comments. She liked sharing the quiet with Roger, how there wasn't such a need to feel the silence and how they could just be. When she was ( ... )

She looked up at him, box in hand, and Roger nodded encouragingly. "Go ahead." He watched her face as she opened the box, and the look on it made him want to grin, but then she started on about how he shouldn't have done it. He smiled wryly. "I can be silly at times," he said lightly. "But not about this."

The internal struggle was on her face as she looked at him. At her next words, he shook his head, reached out and closed his hands over hers on the box. "Hermione, just... take it. I d"- He broke off.

"The money... I have money," he said softly. He remembered the day they'd visited the shop, and feeling like an utter prat that he was living on her property rent-free while she sold off family heirlooms. "I decided I was going to do this while we stood in that shop. You can do whatever you like with it... sell it again... whatever. But I want you to take it now."

"I'd not sell it again; it's a gift," she murmured, feeling uncertain on what decision she should make. If it was Harry or Ron who had bought the ring back for her, though, she knew she'd not feel this way. Well, beyond thinking they'd spent too much money ( ... )

Roger waited while Hermione studied him, meeting her gaze directly and wishing that he knew what she was thinking. Finally, she took the ring and put it on the chain round her neck. He swallowed as he thought of her wearing it there, all the time. At her words, he nodded, and smiled softly when she kissed his cheek. "Okay. Just... here. Let me just..."

He reached around and put his arms about her neck, taking the necklace from her to clasp it himself. He found himself fiddling with it a bit. "Bugger," he said softly in frustration. After a moment, he finally got it done with a satisfied little smile. Because he wanted to feel her skin, he let his fingers trail the back of her neck and along her shoulders before pulling back.

He grinned. He'd been nervous about all that. "So," he said, "You have a choice. I have a little something I'd like to do with you. You might think it's silly, but it's something else I've been thinking about since London. We can do it here, or back at my house. It'll work either place. You pick."

"That's a good definition, I guess: it feels good but scares you a lot," she repeated, smiling as she felt his fingers in her hair. He seemed to like touching her hair, which was quite nice since she liked having it touched ( ... )

Roger pretty much forgot about the book as he pivoted his body towards hers and put his free hand on her waist, fingers digging in just slightly when she kissed him back, her lips moving against his. He traced her jaw with his thumb as his other hand moved back to tangle in her curls as he kissed her. Pulling back briefly to let out a breath, he began to nibble on her bottom lip, flicking his tongue over it lightly and teasingly. Then he lowered his lips to trace the path his thumb had made along her jaw.

Hermione felt his hand on her face before his fingers moving into her hair. She heard an odd noise, something that sounded like a moan and a sigh, and flushed when she realized that she'd made it as he kissed her more intently. He pulled back and she looked at him as his breath blew against her wet lips.

When he nibbled her lip, she shifted and moved her other hand behind him, lightly stroking his back and shoulder as she parted her lips. "Roger," she breathed out softly, pulling his hair lightly as he kissed her jaw, uncertain what exactly she wanted to say or ask for.

"Hmmm?" he murmured as he found the spot just behind her jaw and under her ear. He kissed her there, and her skin felt like satin under his lips. Blowing over the spot with a small smile, he moved back to her lips, closing his eyes as he felt her hands, up and down over his back, tugging on his hair.

In his mind, he was still hearing that little sound she'd made before she'd whispered his name. He nudged her lips apart a bit further, rubbing against them with his own, and made a low sound as he flicked his tongue out to taste her.
