Date: November 28, 2004 Characters: Megan, Zach Location: 2-B River Place Status: Private Summary: Megan keeps her mind off of ex-husbands by helping Zach clean up. Completion: Incomplete
Zacharias was in the process of moving a bag of clothing into his room (socks, underwear, etc) when he heard the knock. He dumped the bag in the middle of his room before he went back out, frowning, wondering who coud be visiting him.
As he came closer to the door, he heard a little voice that sounded awfully familiar. He smiled, and opened the door, expecting to see Ben, Bob, and Terry.
"Hey," He said as he opened it, and looked right into Megan's face, wondering what she was doing there. He blinked in surprise.
"Hi," Megan said, feeling oddly shy all of a sudden. "I thought we might - "
"Funny man!" Ben shouted, and threw his arms around Zach's legs. "Can we see the bunnies? And hunt for treasure?"
"Ben! We're here to help clean up!" She offered Zach an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I figured since I'm just a few floors up, I might - if this is a bad time, we can come back, or not, or..."
"Uh." Zacharias stumbled back a bit, his hands splayed out because he didn't know what to do with them. He looked at Megan for a bit before smiling slightly down at Ben. "Uh sure. Go ahead."
He glanced back at Megan as Ben went off into his apartment, and he opened his door more for her. "It's safe, come on in. He can look around. He probably knows my flat better than I do." Zacharias muttered.
"Oh, it's the same layout as ours," Megan noted as she entered. "Sorry about Ben... he really seems to like you." She hoped Zach didn't mind too much, since having someone around that was comfortable with Ben could really be invaluable. Especially a guy, now that the whole thing with Terry was being finalized.
"You know, I gathered from what you said the other day that you weren't quite moved in, but I didn't really know what to expect." She looked around the room and then smiled at Zach again. "So what do you want me to do?"
Zacharias tried hard not to beam at the indirect praise from Ben. He closed the door behind him and nodded his head in thanks. "Well." He said, and looked at his desks and chairs and his couch.
"My wand's faulty, so that's half of why I'm not doing anything," he muttered, "but I'd just like to get the furniture in places so I can walk around my living room."
He wondered where Ben was, and was pleased to note that he was behind a china cabinet his mother had given him, looking through the glass to a swirl at the top.
Well, Megan knew a good bit about cleaning. Her mum had done everything the Muggle way, but her dad had always been handy with household magic. She waved her wand at a spot of dust on a desk, just to test it out, and was satisfied.
"Have you thought about getting a new wand? I hear Ollivander's set up shop somewhere."
Ben had ducked down to examine the floor underneath the china cabinet. "Mummy! Funny man!" he cried. "I think there's bunnies under here!"
Zacharias blinked. "Has he? I haven't heard.. I guess I should go see him. I haven't used a wand in a week, actually. I think I'm fairing pretty well," he muttered.
He glanced back when Ben exclaimed something. "Bunnies?" He looked at Megan. "What is he talking about?"
Megan shrugged. She hoped there wasn't that much dust built up underneath some of this stuff, but even if Ben somehow got filthy, well, that's what baths were for.
The small boy jumped to his feet and ran over to take Zach's hand. "Come see!"
The look on Zach's face was priceless. Megan waved a hand at him. "I'll straighten some of this stuff - unless you wanted the bed in the living room for some reason?" Maybe Zach had an extra bed. Still, the whole place could use a good cleaning, and Megan rolled up her sleeves.
Zach hurried along - but only because he was being pulled. Ben looked under the small table and pointed; Zach squatted down and tried to see what he was pointing at.
He answered Megan absently. "Uh no, no thanks."
He continued to look under the table, and blinked when he realized his wand was there. He leaned forward and took it, ignoring the dust on his fingers. "Hey." He waved his wand around, grinning at Ben, then at Megan, "I found my wand."
"Great!" Megan beamed. She was feeling useful already. Now, would that table look better in the corner, or over here by the sofa? There were a few stacks of miscellaneous items and papers; she tried to stack them up as neatly as she could just to get things out of the way and clear a path.
Ben was holding out his hand for the wand. "Can I see it? Daddy has one like that and it does real magic. Like Tinkerbell. Please can I see, Mr. Funny Man?"
"Yeah?" Zach frowned a bit. "Well, it's acting a bit weird, but just on the simple spells. Ask your mummy first, would you?" Zacharias glanced at Megan for approval.
Megan nodded, though she was wondering what exactly Zach meant by "weird." Perhaps handing a three-year-old a malfunctioning wand was on the list of "things not to do," but honestly she didn't think Ben would be able to do anything with it. He never had with hers, after all.
"Try Wingardium Leviosa," she told Ben, thinking that would probably be beyond his ability to pronounce.
"Weengardium Leviooosa!" Ben cried, swishing Zach's wand around. A few sparks came flying from the tip, but nothing out of the ordinary. Zach watched with a small, amused smile.
"Win-gar-di-um Le-vi-o-sa," he repeated, but slower. Ben said it like the first time, and Zach snorted to himself when another spark came from the top.
"Hey, a spark is a lot better than I was doing at three," Megan grinned. Maybe it had to do with the type of wand.
"Well, we have a long way to go before we get you your own wand, Benny." She gave the windows a quick spell or two - windows were always tricky but it was a lot better than nothing - and then looked back to Zach.
"So... have you been keeping busy recently? You were sort of quiet the other night at the Hufflepuff reunion."
Megan smiled ruefully. "Yeah, I guess you could. Things have been..." She glanced at Ben. She wasn't about to say anything at all about Terry in front of their son. "Well, you know. Kind of weird."
Ben pointed the wand at one of the tables and practiced his "spell" again, with the same resulting flash. Megan had to figure the chances of him breaking anything were pretty small, and he seemed happy.

"No, I'm doing it!" Ben shouted, and continued to flick Zach's wand around. Zach held up his hands, "Okay, sorry!" He grinned.
"I could say the same about you, really." He looked at her pointedly.
