Seeking advice from people knowledgeable in oceanography, currents, long term weather patterns etc. and/or people who've been alive for more than 30 years.
The current wild and woolly winter weather we're having in Perth at the moment hasn't been seen for a while, but it used to be quite common in my childhood. I then vaguely recalled that there is a 30 year cycle of some sort in ocean currents which might perhaps explain the trend. Possibly 10ish years of normal, 10ish years of El Nino and 10ish years of La Nina? Or three sets of 11-year sunspot cycles? Can anyone clarify that for me?
I'm working under the assumption that 30 years, while laughably short in terms of climate change, is in fact reasonably long term for weather patterns. I could be horribly, horribly wrong.
And in less scientific queries, do any of my fellow aged Perthites recall a time in the 70's and 80's where this sort of weather turned up every year and was not considered exceptional?
Is the weather elsewhere roughly like it used to be 30-odd years ago?
Or am I merely insane?
