PREJUDICE DUE TO UNFAMILIARITY (I HOPE)

Apr 05, 2008 00:12

We had some of Phebe’s and my best friends at our house. I also had my first encounter with a lack of knowledge regarding transsexualism. I should have expected it, yet it really hurt.

One thing you can say about the “pregnant man” is that he generates conversation. Our friends are very liberal, but they just don’t understand transgenderism. We love these people, but they just don’t know about it.

I understand that it’s very strange to cisgender people and very difficult to understand, particularly if you haven’t ever really encountered it before. As usual, the only transgender people they were slightly familiar with were people just starting their transition - people who looked their worst.

So they were rather uncouth in regards to transgenderism. Not really outright rude, but I just had to keep up a front while we were talking. I don’t take it personally, but it hurt a surprising amount. Of course, they had no idea they were hurting me. I know it was unintentional, but it still hurts.

I guess I have to get used to it.
