I'm working on a muslin of a new corset design. It was originally designed for my Sif (2011 Thor Movie) costume, but scrapped the design for Sif-usage after i saw the movie again and decided it was wrong. I love the design i came up with, though, so i'm re-purposing it for steampunk/fantasy costumes.
I actually would like your opinions, particularly concerning the collar. This will be made of black leather, so much stiffer (no wrinkles!) than the muslin it currently boasts. The collar will be a mandarin-style high collar, but I am wondering about the gap between. I originally drew up the design to have a wide gap (little wider than it is below), but now i'm concerned about it moving around too much, even with the high collar in place. I thought either i can leave the gap and use a thin piece of circular spring wire sewn in to keep it in place or to close the gap a bit and put in a couple of neat clasps.
Front shot (haven't put the center boning in yet and i also have to make that front panel narrower by 1/2"). Also, pardon the explosion behind me - i just moved!
Close up of collar area. Upper edge includes the seam allowance, so it comes up high right now.
Back. I need to clean up the upper end of the lacing area - it's supposed to be diamond shaped, but i forgot to leave a seam allowance for the boning sleeve below, so it will be cut larger. You can kind of see my pen marks. Also i've decided i need 12 or 14 holes, not 13. 1" spacing is so easy though!
So, basically wider gap or closures on the collar area? Any other thoughts on the design are welcome too. :)
