My dears, I have just had the privilege of reading the wondrous and lavishly illustrated tome, "Nineteenth-Century Fashion in Detail" by Lucy Johnston. It features huge (we're talking coffee table art book sizes here) photos of amazing dresses, coats, waistcoats, underthings (including corsets) shoes, hats, britches, and other sundry wonders along with enlightening text on the history, construction and materials of each. It also Includes line drawings of each item which make it a snap to find patterns to reproduce the shape or to draft you own, if you are so inclined. It also makes a wonderful source of inspiration to design your own wonders. I rented mine from the local library, but Amazon has it used for $21.33. Its published by V&A Publishing.
(There is also a "Twentieth-Century Fashion in Detail" which would presumably have more on the post 1900 fashions, but I haven't gotten my hands on that yet, so I cant recommend it in good conscience)
