A series of events have led to a very interesting prospect.
Years ago I used to read tarot cards at couple different coffeehouses, one of which is in Flemington. Through the years it has changed owners a couple of times and I found a new coffee shop to patronize which is just a few doors from the comic shop - better coffee + close to "home" = awesome. A few days ago, I was watching the mediocre show "Tru Calling" on SciFi Channel while my sewing machine was working its magic creating an embroidery. I decided to take my old tarot cards that I hadn't touched in a very long time and just flip through them.
Yesterday, I worked at the comic shop mainly to try and sell my bags since there was a craft fair on the sidewalks this whole weekend. I didn't sell anything but the town was busy and the comic shop was steadily swamped. I went over the coffeehouse to see if their espresso beans I usually buy in bulk had arrived yet (they were out a few days prior). The beans were not available but the manager JJ gave me my half-pound from their stash behind the counter and I ordered an iced chai; I had rewards cards for each so I didn't have to actually spend any money which was strange. The sad thing is I found out why there were no beans.
I asked if they would be interested in providing coffee for Wonder Woman Weekend but JJ said they would be closed by then! I was crushed and I felt horrible because I saw in his reddish eyes that he was hurting from the news. Some company bought out Bucks County Coffee Company and decided the shop in Flemington was not was worth keeping open. JJ said that he made an offer to the owner of the building for a two year lease to open his own coffeehouse but the man refused. Plus, the historic/legendary Union Hotel just closed on Thursday - this was were everyone stayed during the trials of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. So with the closing of the Union, this real estate baron simply doesn't have any faith in Main Street businesses.
Today, Ron & I thought we'd try to have lunch at the Union before it closed for good but the doors had already been locked since the morning after the hearing to dispute the sale of the liquor license (worth more than gold in NJ). We didn't know this when I headed there for lunch. I had to convince my beloved that Teaberry's was the best place to go for lunch but it's pricey one at that; still everything there is superb and we were not disappointed. He was afraid he'd be the only man in the foofy floral Victorian but he wasn't and he got a great sandwich plus plenty of pastries. The owner came by to drop off the check and Ron asked about the Halloween Tea that they are hosting as a special event. The owner (Joanne, I think) gave us the skinny - $40 for a six course tea with optional costumes and availability of a psychic for $20 extra; she got full with reservations so she decided to repeat it for a second night, Oct. 30th (Thurs) but she wasn't sure if the psychic would be available. I jumped in and asked if she needed one which spiralled into a discussion about where I've read before, that I've studied with Laurie Cabot and why I love the town, etc. I gave her my phone number and if she gets enough reservations, she'll book me for the night to read tarot instead of the woman who is scheduled for the first night.
So that's the strange round-about way that pulling out my cards a few days ago and a historic landmark closing has lead me to a potential one-night job.
Now, I really have to bust my butt to get a stellar Victorian Gypsy outfit together!!! Ideas, anyone? I have a couple of basic patterns but I definitely don't have a skirt and think it would be easier to buy one.
