Connor was sweating by the time he’d caught up with Ryan.
“Ryan,” he called.
The soldier halted, and turned, a questioning look on his face.
“I owe you,” said Connor. It was not at all the elegant speech he had planned.
“A and E,” replied Ryan.
“What? No! I mean…” stumbled Connor. “Are you laughing at me?”
“You mean we’re not practicing vowels?” asked Ryan.
“I just wanted to thank you,” said Connor. He could feel himself flushing. Once again he’d screwed up.
“I know what you meant,” said Ryan, gently. “Forget it. I was just doing my job.”
