“So I win,” finished Becker smugly. “That’s a week of cooking you owe me.”

Jess pursed her lips. “The bet was that you wear something in a colour that wasn’t black. That shirt is most definitely black.”

Becker’s face assumed an expression of insufferably complacency. “That’s where you’re wrong. It’s not black. It’s midnight.”

Jess read the label. “I see. So that’s how it is. Fine, I’ll cook for you. Shall we start today?”

The complacency faded to be replaced by uneasiness. “No rush. In fact, I think it might be nice if I took you out for dinner tonight.”
