Connor loved walking along the beach with Grandpa following animal tracks across the sand.

“What made these?” asked Connor as he jumped from footprint to footprint making sure to keep within Grandpa’s steps and leave no tell-tale traces of his own.

“A creature,” said Grandpa and laughed when Connor protested that that wasn’t a real answer. Grandpa didn’t care about names. Nor did he care when the water came and washed his footsteps away.

Later Connor had all the answers he wanted but he could never recreate the comforting familiarity of sheltering safely in a footprint larger than his own.
