Lester blamed habit.
When the children were small he had visited their rooms each night and wished them “sweet dreams”. If they were awake they would respond eagerly, “You too, daddy.” If asleep, they would snuffle in innocent contentment as Lester’s breath tickled their soft cheeks.
After the divorce the bedroom location had shifted from country house to the spare room of his London flat but the custom had continued from childhood till teens.
Connor was no relation. Or even welcome. Still, as he heard his new houseguest turning restlessly Lester could not resist going to say, “Goodnight, sleep tight.”
