AN: This being a Golden Age series Emily’s ‘war’ refers to the Great War of 1914-18 where more than 16 million are estimated to have died. This is also doing duty for the scapegoat bingo square.

When Henry Merchant died suddenly his estranged wife, Emily, was the obvious suspect. Visiting her cell, Sir James found her first silent and then defiant:

“The War took everything. Henry wanted only to escape the guilt of survival and the memory of the dead. Now he’s free. And I’m glad. But it wasn’t by my hand.”

“No, his own,” replied Lester. “Henry died of a self-administered overdose. You can go home.”

“I won’t go back,” she declared.

Lester eyed her with pity tinged admiration. “You can go forward.”

Tears started to fall. She raised her hands to cover her face.
