Rock On Anthrocon!

A while back after getting back from Anthrocon I responded to a post about DJ-ing at the con next year.

I loved the con, but for my liking the dance program was, well a bit too much dance, in that I mean it their was far too much emphasis on dance and electronic music rather then any personal objection to peoples rhytmic movement to music. So I e- ( Read more... )

Sounds to me like the rebuffal i got when i DARED to suggest on a forum that at the next Cologne Furdance, they might wanna play something a bit less "techno" than what they did... (i mean 7 straight hours of jumpstyle - nothing below 120 BPM.. who the fuck can endure that? Especially in suit!).

They answered "you arrived too late".
I was there at 10PM. (I worked until 8PM, and i live in Belgium..and the Furdance was supposed to start at 8.30 - which party gets "busy/started" before 2 solid hours after starting time?).. Too late.. my arse!

I guess the DJ felt insulted that someone might not have liked his set...

(But for me, a good DJ is someone who doesn't play what HE/SHE likes, but what people WANTS to hear! And seeing other people's reactions, i was not the only one hoping for some more slow-paced songs)..

Therefore, i'm 100% behind you!

Music like the one we had at the party of RBW the year we met... that was perfect.. never danced that much in suit my entire life!

I myself don't believe DJs have to be democratic to the audience's will, but I would expect them to throw in the occasional crowd pleaser in-between the stuff he/she wants to introduce to the audience.

There is a common conceit amongst certain people in the fandom that everyone enjoys techno, happy hardcore and that genre of music and that there is an unwillingness to try something new because "that's what works". To a point, it does, but I also know of a vast swathe of furs who are disillusioned with the current musical offerings at fur cons and wish for something different. If this is a minority, then I can tell you it's a sizeable one, but, like most things, the majority wills out and if the main DJs are into a particular kind of music then that's the kind of music you will get ( ... )

I suppose that's the problem sometimes, these furcons aren't public funded like the BBC so they haven't got a mandate to cater for different tastes LOL. Course neither of us are demanding that everybody's obscure sub-genre be fulfilled but it's reasonable to say that there's plenty of furs who prefer a bit of the good old guitar ( ... )
