Rock On Anthrocon!

A while back after getting back from Anthrocon I responded to a post about DJ-ing at the con next year.

I loved the con, but for my liking the dance program was, well a bit too much dance, in that I mean it their was far too much emphasis on dance and electronic music rather then any personal objection to peoples rhytmic movement to music. So I e- ( Read more... )

There is a common conceit amongst certain people in the fandom that everyone enjoys techno, happy hardcore and that genre of music and that there is an unwillingness to try something new because "that's what works". To a point, it does, but I also know of a vast swathe of furs who are disillusioned with the current musical offerings at fur cons and wish for something different. If this is a minority, then I can tell you it's a sizeable one, but, like most things, the majority wills out and if the main DJs are into a particular kind of music then that's the kind of music you will get.

EF provided an alternaitve this year, with an alternative set in the basement bar. The problem was that the set didn't know what it wanted to be and it was far too disperate. Also, it was a long way away from where the main action was happening so it was far from being popular. I don't see it being repeated. Graafen's set at CF is fantastic but I have heard it has generated criticism from the more dance-orientated furs. Whether this is true or not, I don't know.

I am now resigned to the fact that fur dances will not play music of my liking and thus I am not going to go to them or I will find something else to do. I think this is wrong - I think 8 hours of relentless techno alienates all those who don't like that style of music - all I ask for, like you, is a little variation. Even if it's a little bit of cheese, it would be welcome. Still, I won't hold my breath - I have said these exact same words for over two years now and have had a largely similar response to that you have gotten yourself.
