Bobby has a couple of problems
So I took Bobby to the vet today for a checkup, and to find out about a couple issues he's been having lately. The first was the hair loss he was beginning to experience that didn't seem like his normal shedding. He started developing a bald spot on the base of his tail and back. The second, he started having a weird growth right next to his butthole. It grew pretty big and I'm glad we already had a vet appt when we did. They whole time though, Bobby has been acting fine. Still poops and pees and makes trouble per usual.
So, this is what the vet concluded after checking him.
The hair loss is a definitly a sign of Adrenal Disease and he'll have to have surgery to remove the problem gland. I trust the doctor because he says he's pretty experienced with the surgery since its a fairly common thing to happen to ferrets over 3 yrs old.
The bump on his tush however.... he said was quite odd. Dr. Kramer kept Bobby for the day to remove the bump and figure out what the heck it was. So turns out it could be a couple of things. One of which is really scary. The doctor said that after he removed it he found that it was mostly pus so he has an infection of some kind. Under all the pus though, was some odd looking tissue. He believes that when Bobby was a baby, and had his anal glands removed (a normal procedure for most ferrets), they might have left a small piece behind and that piece suddenly got infected or it could be cancer. Hopefully hopefully hopefully my baby doesn't have cancer. The doc said if it is cancer, it might be hard to remove completely. :(
So now Bobby is going to have all these tests done to find out what exactly was on his tush and then at a later date he will need to have surgery to remove his adrenal glands. All of this is costing quite a bit (so far $750 for all the antibiotics, tests, and the removal of the mystery lump) and then the surgery later will cost more.
