Romancing the Stone The DVD has been sitting in the shelf forever. I finally decided to watch it yesterday. This journal is pushing me to watch new movies. That's exactly what I need. I was too lazy about movies before. The same thing happened with The Princess Bride, which turned out to be one of my favorite movies. So I popped Romancing the Stone into the DVD player after watching The Court Jester and Sleeping Beauty (my sister and I haven't watched that in a while).
The first thing I noticed was the director- Robert Zemeckis- and the composer- Alan Silvestri. The two worked on Back to the Future, and Alan worked on, among other things, Lilo and Stitch! He's a great composer. The music in those movies and Romancing the Stone is awesome. Robert's a pretty cool director too. I wasn't to crazy about this last films though- I think he was a producer for those... The Polar Express and Monster House.
I like how this movie starts like a romantic comedy, but then it turns into an adventure. I always get a craving for adventure, and this filled it, for the most part. Mostly that craving comes from my craving to watch Stardust, but not having it. It's still not in the library, so I'm going to have to wait a little while.
Obviously Romancing the Stone wouldn't satisfy my craving for Stardust because Stardust is a fantasy. But as for romance adventure comedy, it was very good. I remembered how Fools Gold (it involves treasure just like RtS) did terrible, and the critics said it didn't succeed with comedy or adventure. I never saw it so I don't know.
The great thing about Romancing the Stone is it's very realistic for how someone would react to being lost in a jungle. I found myself thinking of The Mummy Returns, where the characters were totally fine with wandering all over the place without food, showers, water, extra clothes, etc. In RtS I thought it was hilarious that they found a plane full of marijuana, so they used it to make a fire. It felt nice to watch the characters walk through the jungle in pouring rain, and actually look for shelter and food and whatnot. It made it feel much more real. They did do that annoying thing where everyone shoots at each other and no one gets hurt. Of course the villain and heroes can't get killed right away. It's still annoying though. I feel like every villain and hero in the world has very bad aim.
