It's been a year since I've seen this film. Now, after getting much deeper into movies than I was last year and after taking my Reading Film as Literature class, I watched this film with a new eye. But I also watched it just for the pure AWESOMENESS of it!
This is going to sound like a review. Sorry. It's fangirling disguised as a review. :D
On the back of a DVD box, a review said, "Pure Escapism." I think it was on the Romancing the Stone box. I would say that very thing about Stardust. That's what fantasy movies are supposed to be, right? Stardust is one of my favorite fantasy films now. Not only is it a great story, but the film is beautifully made. There are beautiful shots in this movie (I had to notice shots in my class), and I had the feeling that the director and the others that worked on this film put a lot of effort in what each shot would look like. I like that in a movie. Matthew Vaughn is good. Very good. The film also has many many great transitions from scene to scene to keep the film from feeling choppy. Even though there's many of them, it doesn't get annoying. The score was wonderful, it matched the visuals perfectly. I haven't bought score in a very long time.
Last year, as I mentioned in a previous post, this movie was compared to The Princess Bride. Even though this is a great fantasy film, The Princess Bride is more satire. When I saw this last year, I was disappointed that it wasn't as much like TPB as I thought. This time I let that go as I watched the film. I let myself get lost in it. Fans of TPB, like me, will probably like this movie, though.
Now to get back to the "escapism" thing. Maybe not only the movie itself can be escapism. It was cold when I watched this movie, so I put on my new, comfy sweatshirt. I ate ice cream. I was so comfortable. Complicated outside life flew out the window. It was a glorious way to spend one of the last nights of summer. People who need to relax should do this kind of thing.
This is a movie that I can watch over and over and over again- just like The Princess Bride :)
1. Every shot of the star falling to earth
2. The montage of Tristan and Yvaine living on the ship
3. The shots of the ship landing
4. Yvaine dances with Tristan
5. Yvaine realizes that tRistan heard her "love speech"
6. Yvaine tries to get the witch's attention
7. Michelle Pfeiffer
8. The ending battle where the witch shoots glass at Yvaine and Tristan
9. "Are you tempted?"-Yvaine
"By what?"-Tristan
"Immortal life?"-Yvaine
10. "You have no idea how great it is to open up to you young people."
11. The Pirates Battle was pretty hilarious
12. The sword fighting scene between Tristan and the dead Prince. That was cool
13. The Prince pretends to die in front of his brother, and then he laughs at him. "You really thought you were king!"
Uh, if I keep going I'm going to list the entire movie.
