~*~The Story of Us: Part Five (A Hard Beginning Maketh a Good Ending)~*~
“You killed a dragon? And an entire army of hell demons?” Xander gaped at the vampire that was seated across from him.
“That’s what I just said, you dolt. Dragon, demons, vampires - you name it, they sent it. Angel and I killed ‘em all.”
Xander felt his mouth move up and down like a fish’s. He didn’t know quite what to say.
Angel cleared his throat and shifted in his seat. “We didn’t know where else to go afterwards…” Both vampires’ clothes were in tatters and they looked as if they hadn’t showered in weeks. Spike looked especially worse for wear. There were black circles under his eyes and various cuts that were only halfway through healing. Xander was pretty sure that under those shreds of clothing there was a bigger mess to be seen. He shook his head slightly.
“Right. Ummm…I’m sure we can find you some new clothes and a place to recuperate…let me just get a hold of Buf…”
“No!” Angel moved so quickly that Xander jumped in his chair. The vampire winced a tiny wince before sitting back. “I mean, we don’t want to bother her. We’ll just need a few days. And maybe some way to get around.”
Spike was looking off through the window behind Xander’s shoulder and biting the insides of his lips. One leg bounced wildly with nerves. He looked like he was about to scream.
Xander nodded. “Sure. But I’ll still need to get a hold of Giles so that we can process the funds.”
“Don’t mention we’re here.”
“What am I supposed to tell him when I ask for a few thousand dollars and a car?”
Angel’s eyes flashed golden for a brief second. “Tell him it’s for a new slayer-in-training. There’s a lot of them coming in and out anyway, or so I hear.”
“And he’s not going to want to meet her or set up a training schedule with her or - at the very least - know her name? Good plan.”
“Tell him it’s for you.”
Angel and Xander looked at Spike. His leg was still bobbing away, but his face had relaxed some.
“That is probably a worse idea than Angel’s.”
Spike zeroed in on Xander’s eye. “You’ve been having headaches for the last week and didn’t want to bother anyone with them. You’re stressed out over having to capture new slayers right now. You need a small vacation and you’re willing to take it across town instead of out of the country. You can be reached at the motel if something monumental happens. Best of all, you’re out of Rupert’s hair for a good few days.” The vampire’s leg stilled, but he went back to biting his lips. His eyes stayed on Xander’s.
Xander and Angel sat stunned. “Sounds like it might work…except where do I go on this ‘vacation’?”
“Good point…”
“You’re with me.” Spike’s right eyebrow shifted up just ever so slightly and his mouth twitched into the tiniest smile. Xander’s whole body tingled and burned. Angel shifted in his chair and cleared his throat.
“Okay.”
And that was that.
It turned out to be the best vacation Xander had ever had.
