I don't remember clearly, but I think Kirk is tortured and he suffers a brain injury, or some kind of psychological trauma, so he is not himself: he is mute and maybe amnesic and he behaves almost as a child. Hey! I'm looking for a fic I read years ago where Jim had amnesia and he went missing. Spock eventually finds him in some ocean or seaside town on a cold coast or something; I just remember that there's a scene of them at the end where they're by the water. So I remember very little from this fic. Mostly that Jim had an amnesia and was living in a small town and if i recall correctly nobody really knew who he was because he just appeared out of nowhere.
