The pattern I used put in a holding gusset in the back to help keep the opening from going too far, as seen in these pics.

That is the back view, as the back ended up cut pretty deeply. This was based on a design I was trying out some years ago, from the comments of an SCA Laurel that taught her class at CoCo. You can read about that smock here:

I am not fond of such a deep backend, so I don't wear that smock much anymore, which is why I want a new smock.
Since then, I've seen an extant Italian square necked smock in Moda de Firenza that shows the back is NOT cut at all, just open in the front. Margo's new Tudor pattern appears to have a shallow square cut in the back.
Btw, even Jane had her smock pinned to the gown in her workshop presentation for the Tudor Tailor book. So this isn't an unusual problem.
