Treasure Chest thing

Today, I took a break from my ongoing sewing, grabbed my sewing box, a small carry bag of beading supplies, an ice chest of foodstuffs, and my basket with my new ceramic mug (glass goblet is not a good look with "yeoman" style clothes) and headed out at a decent, but not early hour to enjoy my first SCA event of the year.

It was Treasure Chest, which is not a war, but a combat prize thing the Barony enjoys doing every year. Most years it conflicts with Visalia, but this year because of Pentathalon next weekend, they upped the date, and I am glad they did so I could enjoy it with my Barony.

I got to watch several rounds of various combat scenarios, including the 5 man teams for the Treasure Chest prize, while helping Lady Muriel and her cadre of teen boys provide water, gatorade, pickels and orange slices to the fighters. Man, even with the "new waterbearing rules" she told me about, she still works her behind off to make sure the fighters are well tended to. I made it my job, while I was there, to make sure she got looked after as well. I didn't stay the whole time, as my tummy growled and demanded food, and she had several other helpers as well, so I went for lunch. But the appreciation from the fighters was a good thing to see and enjoy.

After lunch I spent time doing up my hair fancy with the freshwater pearls and silver wire I had brought with me (which I will post about in my other journal: kimikosews). I then wandered over to the merchants area with Lady Telerie (who will soon be a Mistress!) and found several booths of interesting stuff, including the Trim Lady (well known in Caid). She had a dark grey and silver trim that I can use for my petticoat bottom, a lovely couple of yards of a gold braid, and pretty pewter buttons that will work up nicely for my little belt. I then went back and enjoyed more doodad making until the sinus headache kicked in (must remember my alergy meds next week). I also enjoyed the chatting going on, and heard from one lady about how naalbinding (sp?) is done, and that she will be offering a class at Academia in August (I still don't know what to offer).

Finally, Closing Court was very fun, and funny! Some of our barony fighters decided to dress down into old beatup shirts with various handmade written sayings on them, in a manner I can't really describe, and even our Baron got into the odd mood and humor. If anyone posts photos of them, I will post later. But everyone was having a good time, the King and Queen gave their various awards (Countess Caroline received a Harp Argent! for her illumination), and they were going to do a group feast that I would have wanted to enjoy, but I had dinner with my gaming group waiting for me when I got home. But I had a great time, and enjoyed the day away from the kids just to hang out and do stuff.

I saw lots of kids of all ages this time, so I will definitely be making my kids clothes for Anniversary. Something simple, tho with pretty trim for Relle. And maybe something simple for Rob, too (if he is inclined to go with me). The kids seemed to like playing around, within view of parents who were doing their own thing, so hopefully at Anniversary there will be some kids of age to both of mine for them to spend time with and have fun. I met at least one other Mom on her own who has kids close in age. So, now to figure out if I want to camp then, or not, and if so do I get a mundane tent? Make a period pavillion? Or just do a day trip?

Well, soon it is time to game, so off to do other things.
