Fashion book review

Well, last night I finished the fashion book I blogged about before. It was overall very informative, and I learned a few new things in it. But... it was written by 20 different women, who did not all agree on some things, and nothing was dealt with in any real depth. Sort of like 20 beginner classes in one book, so you get a decent overview on ( Read more... )

"Color Me Beautiful" is a book my mother bought when I was I think around 11? There's a few spots where it's minorly off if I remember right, but overall it's not bad for helping find colors that compliment you instead of washing you out or making you look sick, etc etc.

I have it, and most modern books talk about those colors as being "outdated" for today. I had some problems with it, as my coloring is both asian and white (both yellow and pink), so I had some difficulties in some areas of their color scheme. But it is why I do like to wear jewel tones, as clothing wise, it works for me.

OK, maybe I'm missing some key piece of information or something, but how can colors be outdated? (OK, OK, aside from our dayglo neon scariness we were so fond of - yellow & green were particularly yucky *shudders*)

There's a girl here at the school who is what I'd call a "contoured rectangle" (and not petite) and she does wear belts. She pulls it off though, because she's abso-freaking-lutely adorable. She favors knee length sheath dresses and cardigans that reach the hip, and she usually does accessorize with a belt at the waist, and classic pumps. It honestly looks good on her ( ... )

Hell, I follow it to get fashion ideas for my own wardrobe and I'm a wee slip of a lass!

Thank you for your excellent advice. I've even added the LJ comm to my list. My hangup seems to be what kind of jacket to wear. I don't want to make something only to end up hating how it looks on me. I've done that a few times, and it is frustrating. I guess I need to get out and try stuff on to see what works or doesn't.

And hey, yeah, maybe a part of your field to check into, if it appeals to you.

This may not be of interest to you, but I'm a fashion retard and need any advice I can get on what to wear and why. Some time ago I started watching that HGTV show "What Not to Wear" and I generally learned several new things in every episode. I particularly like their review of the hidden camera video -- it's always interesting to see "heeeey, I wear that ... do *I* look that dumpy in it too??!" -- but the real gold of the show is their suggested outfits section. They bring the person over to a few manequins and point out what to wear and WHY. Like I said, I've learned a whole lot and it's really helped me think in terms of overall presentation, not just piecemeal like I used to. This awareness has also spilled over into costuming because now I'm evaluating things differently, noticing where the fit doesn't work with the body style of a given period, etc.

And those fashion consultants are FREE because they are on TV.

That is a great way to learn. I used to watch the show on with the two Brittish ladies, who eventually wrote a book, and that's what started the American version. I liked it with the two Brits, but when it became American, I didn't like the nasty attacks I was seeing with Stacey and her male partner. Not like the brits weren't catty, they were, but they seemed more helpful overall. I even bought the Brits book, and checked out the book from the TLC people from the library once ( ... )

Oh, and at one point some years ago, I seriously thought about signing up for their makeovers, and be on tv. But I just couldn't imagine myself on tv trying to put on my old long sweaters in that 360 degree mirror room being grilled by those two. I know I look bad in what I currently have. I don't need that part reinforce over and over again in public humiliation and shame. That's why I want to change. I also can't see myself spending $5000 (or whatever amount it is now) in 2 days. I would just freeze!
