The next thing I've been pondering since Mary left yesterday has been Pentathlon, which is Caid's Arts & Science competition that occurs every two years. I think I've mentioned it before.
I took the class Lady Teleri offered, because I do want to enter the competition, and having never attended one, had no idea what was done, or what to expect.
I originally was thinking of just entering a few items in the A&S Fair portion, just to test the waters. But Lady Mary challenged me (not a bad thing I've come to realize about myself as I will take the challenge) to go for all five entries as stated in the rules. As she said, the worst that could happen is I don't make all five items, so I enter what I do have in the Fair portion.
But it does make me think harder on what I could accomplish in this time period, knowing I have another major costume project for faire that also has to be done.
Since things are broken down by Categories, here's my ideas for what I could make that would help me to make more stuff for my persona, and can also be used at faires as well.
Visual Arts:
- Calligraphy: A simple poem an old friend wrote for me.
- Illumination: a sample image I want to make up to learn this art, anyway.
Fiber Arts
- Costume Construction or Period Construction: My Elizabethan kirtle and gown. Most likely it will end up in Period Construction, because it will most likely end up completely hand sewn.
- Hats: Either an English version of the French hood, or perhaps a simple linen coif, both of which would be nice to have.
- Needlework: I am thinking of an Italian pocket done in blackwork (either red or black in color). Or I may do an Elizabethan coif that would work for my late Elizabethan gown. I just have vague memories that others have done similar, so it may not "catch the judges eye" to do another. (edit) I could also do a Tudor partlet in blackwork, or a pair of sleeves.
- Accessories: the pretty, sparkly headdress thingies that my late Elizabethan gown would require for my hair.
Functional Arts
- Leather: I am pondering a pair of leather gloves. I made one already, and never made its pair... but I always get stumped at the part of needing to decorate the gauntlets. What would I do?
- Herbcraft: Subcategory of Ornamental, either potpourri or a pomander, both of which is already on my plans as part of my "medieval/dyers" garden scheme. Dye stuffs is also in this category, but I have no idea what one does with 'dye stuffs'. Show the herb? Show what it looks like as a dyed item? Both? ???Maybe I should ask Teleri on this.
That leaves at least one more category to attempt. I was thinking Culinary Arts, maybe, in the Herb Dish since I will be raising my own fresh herbs. Or maybe a Preserve for the fruits I hope to grow. I've just never thought of what period cooking I could do, since I am not really into cooking for fun.
There is also Compositional Arts, which could be a Research Paper, or a How-to Paper. Considering my interest in French hoods, or button closures, there's something to maybe look into the full research for. More likely the button closures, as I've been itching to delve further into that.
