morning, costumes and memories of old faire...

(6:45am) Gads, I hate being up this early in the morning, but my body's constant bathroom and sinus runs just got to me. Maybe I can fall asleep again later this morning.

Not much happening, except I miss my Mom badly this morning. Some days are fine, some days aren't. I think I am ok this morning, but I miss her.

I've been thinking about working on some hats for faire. An English gable, a French hood, and an Elizabethan something, maybe a tall hat or a simple attifet (or both?).

Thing is, I need to get covering materials for the hats, from the fine linen lining, to the outer coverings. I know where I am getting the linen, it's the choices for outer coverings I am debating. Do I go with velvet? Cotton or silk velvet? Most cotton velvet is upholstery weight... would that be too difficult to sew through for a hat? Would silk velvet (silk/rayon actually) be too "shiny" for a period hat? I know satin or taffeta is ok, but would either be too shiny for me to wear? And I will need gold satin or something for the gable frontpiece.

On a side note as I am wandering through hat sites, I love reading Lynn McMaster's website now and then, to see what projects she has written up. I used to know her when she was in Royal Stewarts years ago. For example, there is this beautiful red and gold gown based on Eleanora of Toledo's burial gown that is stunning. What's amazing is that the embroidery is an iron-on transfer type of embroidery... and doing a google search I find that MJ Trims sells such a thing, which I had never heard of before. So, now I am wanting some of this lovely (and a little pricy) trim for my next gown.

On a wonderful side note to that (and a trip down memory lane), the photos of the lady wearing the gown is taken in front of court... where I see in 2002 my Tudor Rose on the banner behind the lady is still alive!!! I made several of those roses (in two sizes) years ago for GayLinn Kirkpatrick, who used to be Queen at Northern (until REC North closed), and still is Queen at Southern, many years ago when she was Mary Queen of Scots (and another member of Royal Stewarts, and St. Andrews before that) and Queen Elizabeth at our local ren faires. Here's a pic of me in front of another one of those Tudor roses... I think I only made one rose with the ER letters. The red banner is different, as the roses are just gessoed painted canvas that can be pinned onto whatever. Here's another photo of me (as Madge Shelton, Maid of Honor) and GayLinn, as she inspects a necklace I made for her. She's sitting in front of another banner with the smaller Tudor roses peaking out. I believe that was Folsom Faire in the late 90s [edit: docryder recalls that was in 1995]. Wow, old memories of fun times, before she went onto bigger and better things, and I got burnt out of faire. I think that is satyr69 to my left as the eeeeeevil Lord Edward deVere, the 17th Earl of Oxford (cue Darth Vader theme).

Well, Cam's up, so time to go for now... and time to ponder on the question of hat fabrics.
