Salutations from the SLUG

Feb 13, 2006 18:10

I think I might’ve found another home, what with the free printing a plus and all…well, it and the “SLUG Bait” jars are probably paid for by our UHC fees…but still. I now have a chance to actually use that money :P Actually, maybe I should use it more, even after I have my own computer again. I mainly didn’t come here before because it was out of my way…and well, I reasoned that it’s not nearly as far out of my way as the dorm room. So this’ll be a nice place to stop in between my odd classes…namely between chemistry and bio lab on Mondays and chem and physics lab on Thursdays…and perhaps any other time I feel like doing a livejournal update or something…I might even try pulling out pirates (I haven’t tried yet). I did try AIM express but something is blocking pop-ups on these computers besides the windows firewall. I haven’t figured out what it is yet. Anyway, I’m here right now purely for an update…I have a headache and I’m quite hungry at the moment.

I’ll start with the progress on my computer. It’s been taken in with the help of Jimmy’s lovely mom, CJ, to NW Computer Support in Portland. I received a couple calls from them today, one informing me that the repair would cost almost $500. It’s $365 for the part. So, they told me to call Toshiba for an exception code, which I did. They gave me a case number and told me to call back tomorrow 8am-8pm EST. That’s where that is.

Which yeah, I spent the weekend with Jimmy and his family in Aloha. That was fun, as usual. Found a liking to playing Double Dash although I’m still not that good at racing. Had dinner with a family friend of theirs on Saturday, which I found amusing because CJ mistook the smell of it in the car as Jordan farting. Which, I almost gagged while I processed that and the smell hit me at the same time…I was laughing instead. We received a reminder on how immature Ahmed could be sometimes on the way back…that or apparently he has a fear of girltalk. CJ also helped me write my resume yesterday, and I’m really grateful that she did that. I was going to take it into the UHC to show Rebecca today, but I was stuck in lab and talking to the computer places (NW Computer Support closes at 5) until after the office closed at 5.

Because I don’t have my laptop, I’ve been spending more time outside of the room. Two Thursdays ago, I went to the weekly music performance in the MU at noon. An ensemble that I found somewhat interesting had the stage that day: trumpet, soprano and piano. Basically, I ate lunch at Carl’s Jr., walked up to the central part of the MU, claimed a bench upstairs, kicked off my shoes, and read Pillars of Creation while sipping the rest of my lemonade. It was a relaxing way to spend my free time before chemistry recitation that day.

That leads me to another thing: I’ve finished Pillars of Creation and Naked Empire during the time I’ve been off my laptop (Pillars of Creation was started a handful of chapters in), the latter being completed last night. I’ll look into buy Chainfire soon, probably not at the moment as I have quite of bit to do now.

Alishia and I are currently doing a biology project that involves growing radish plants upside-down. I’m to water our “babies” on Wednesdays. We let the plants grow so they could sprout for a week, and so we spent a couple of hours preparing and flipping them today…it was pretty tiring after first doing the general lab today. We have yet to name all of them…I think 3 are named so far.

I also asked Indira to write a recommendation letter for me, and she mildly surprised me by saying “yes”…which leads me to a handful of applications that I have to keep me busy. As far as scholarships are concerned, there’s one for the state union and one for the college of science. For summer activities there’s the HHMI research program here at OSU over the summer, the Wolf’s Hollow internship in the Pudget Sounds, and the Oregon Zoo is back on the list thanks to Indira.

I’ve had my first round of midterms for this term in the past couple of weeks: 71/100 for chemistry, 16something/200 after the adjustment, 48/50 for biology. That translates into two Bs and an A.

I saw a backpack that was exactly like Hayley’s in high school on the way to chemistry two Fridays ago, except instead of “KHC” on the back, the letters were “CMM”. I then thought of Mrs. Kabisch tripping over our bags in chemistry during sophomore year.

We switched biology professors last Wednesday. Dr. Coffeen sounds right, but yet not. He mentioned that he didn’t have a practice midterm exam because he’s never taught BI212 before, and from the way he present himself and the material, it was pretty evident. He’s improved a little as far as his confidence goes, but man, I was slightly skeptical as he started off his lecture on Wednesday nervously telling us that plants have roots, stems and leaves. The material, although still stuff I recognize from AP Biology, has become more complex than that fairly quickly, so it’s fine now.

Two quotes from Indira from today’s lab: “You should let them [the radishes] at least grow their real sets of leaves before beginning your torture programs on your radishes.”

“You can sign up with your partner so I can deal with both of you at the same time.” (her tone contributed to this one).

I’m sure I have a couple written down for Eddie, but I don’t have them with me.

Anyways, I’ve decided I’m hungry enough to trek back now (rather than look back on my last two-three weeks for something else I wanted to add).

Have a good morning/day/evening/night.

quotes, amusement
